You need a psu.

Buy that.

And...

Or a gtx460 1GB.

The 550ti is really a horrible gpu.

You don't need to spend $100 on a PSU. I myself bought an Antec Earthwatts 500 for $50 a few years ago. They don't make those anymore but you can find others equally good for around the same price.

It's $85, saves him room for upgrades, and falls in his price range with the gpu...

It's $95 to be precise, that $10 "rebate" is really a gift gard.

But you can cash them at your bank... At least with all the rebate cards i've gotten you could.

Could be.

Anyways, as for the video card itself, I'd say definitely the Radeon 6850. The 6870 is only slightly better, but costs $30 more. You could easily overclock the 6850 to overcome that difference, and best of all you'll spend less than $160 for it. I am brand agnostic btw, nvidia - ati - doesn't matter, whatever is best bang for your buck, and at that price point, it's definitely the radeon 6850.

If I wanted to upgrade right now, the 6850 is definitely what I would get. I'm waiting til skyrim comes out before I upgrade though.

Lifetime warranty and costs 160 bucks...leaving tons of room for a psu

True, 6850 is another great option. I was just going for the fastest I could fit in his budget.

Screw that turd of a 550Ti for $178. The 560Ti is 80% faster than a 550Ti, and you can get one for $205 after rebates at NewEgg:

Just noticed you're in Canadia...don't know what your options are there.

Oh I just realized that is what you linked. Good choice either way. Reason I give the 6850 the edge though is because their performance with each other is roughly identical, the 6870 only *slightly* winning. That, and the 6850 requires much less power, so it would be less of a burden on the PSU.

Plus if you're like me, you like your PC producing the least heat possible (keep in mind the difference between that, and keeping your PC cool - two separate things) and it wins in that department as well.

Yeah, the 6850 would be a nice choice for him. Either way, he needs a new power supply as 300 watts is not near enough.

Thx guys really appretiate the help, I might just pick up the 6850 with a antec 500W down town where i live I watched a dude play crysis 1 maxed 1080p 50 frames (still the hardest game to run i do believe)

just wondering how ati/amd's drivers are compared to nvidia's?
because iam loving the their drivers atm and instead might get a gtx 460 :)

Ok out of all the local stores i have decided on the EVGA gtx 460 for 213$
but which PSu should i buy?

Thermaltake TR2 600W ATX12V & EPS12V Power Supply=70$

Ultra Products 550watt Lifetime Series Pro ATX Power Supply =60$

I still think the GTX 470 EVGA Rec. for $195 is the better deal ,It is faster then the HD 6850 in ever review I looked at ,and that is at default speed.Once you overclock it as low as 660/1700 then it is faster then the HD 6870I keep hearing they run hot ,but I have three of them but just running two so I have a space between them and mine idle at 34c and 35c.Running vantage or 3Dmark 11 they never get above 72c with the fan at 70% which it is quiet and I run them at 700/1400/1750 at default voltage. But I have a good cooling case.I see the reviews but I never reach 88c unless I am really overclocking it with more voltage 825/1650/1900.Plus the Antec High Current Gamer Series HCG-520 520W for $53 with it's 10% discount and free shipping. It has a single 12v rail of 40amps and it up to 88% efficient.http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371047
