id founder John Carmack has been talking to Industry Gamers (http://www.industrygamers.com/news/doom-creator-fires-back-at-devs-with-snooty-attitude/) about the success of mainstream shooters like Call of Duty. He defends the series, saying â??As long as people are buying it, it means theyâ??re enjoying it,â?? and criticises the â??snooty attitudeâ?? of indie developers who criticise the lack of innovation in the military squad shooter format. â??Itâ??s almost as if itâ??s popular, itâ??s not good. And thatâ??s just not true,â?? he says.
â??If they buy the next Call of Duty, itâ??s because they loved the last one and they want more of it,â?? adds Carmack. â??So I am pretty down on people who take the sort of creative auteursâ?? perspective. Itâ??s like â??Oh, weâ??re not being creative.â?? But weâ??re creating value for people â?? thatâ??s our job! Itâ??s not to do something that nobodyâ??s ever seen before. Itâ??s to do something that people love so much theyâ??re willing to give us money for.â??

But thatâ??s still a proven formula that people like, and itâ??s a mistake to [discount that]. As long as people are buying it, it means theyâ??re enjoying it.â??
