Battlefield 3 retail copies will require players to install Origin to work, according to a Q&A session between fans and DICE community manager Daniel Martos on the BF3blog (http://bf3blog.com/2011/08/origin-required-to-play-battlefield-3/). Fans were asking whether Origin would be required to run the retail version of Battlefield 3. Martos tweeted (https://twitter.com/#!/zh1nt0/status/100892143303925760) ‚??Yes those ‚??rumours‚?? are true.‚?? Beyond retail, Battlefield 3 will be available to buy through all major digital stores except Steam (http://www.pcgamer.com/2011/08/08/battlefield-3-wont-be-on-steam-ea-blame-steam-terms-of-service/), but it‚??s not clear whether those versions will also require EA‚??s new client to be installed.

Great. Just freaking great. It's going to get to the point where we'll have to have various pieces of software installed just to play a given game. We are going to have garbage filling up our HDs, memory, and system trays. Throw in the "incompatibilities" that each component will throw in to make a competitor's game crash, this is going to turn into a nightmare.

Unfortunately, I've already preordered BF3. I wish I hadn't now. I don't think I can get my money back, thank you Direct2Drive. I feel strong enough about this stuff that if I knew about this I wouldn't have ordered it. Hopefully the digital copies will be free of this crap.

Dang what would be the point of this? It must be used to see which if your friends are online so you can invite them to games and stuff. Maybe the decision will be reversed.

I hope so. If I buy a hard copy of a game, I would hate to have to sign in to a online service in order to play a single-player game.:thumbdwn:

obviously you'd need origin to play. why the hell not. since they are trying to force origin down our throats, but they made it so retail copies didn't need origin, that would seriously damage their position.

You have to sign in to EA when you played BC2, BF2, BF2142. This is no different.

true, and since the server browser is integrated into battlelog, being logged into origin will allow you to find people?

My biggest problem is EA's server browser is HORRIBLE but it isn't anything new. They just now call it Origin. Same BS different name.

You will be able to hook up with your friends. You could in BC2.

I have to say that i find it odd that the same people who said they wouldn't buy the game if it wasn't released on steam now complain over the fact that orgin needs to be running when playing it  So you're all fine with having steam running while playing other games but cringe when EA want's you to do the same with Orgin ? What's the difference ? :headexplode:

Two words. Steam overlay.

I'm failing to find the real issue here...I think it's just something else to blow out of proportion and bitch about. At the end of the day you have to make a couple extra key clicks to play a videogame. It isn't the end of the freaking world.

Get used to needing a persistent internet connection and one of the Steam-alikes to play anything. It's here to stay.

I honestly doubt extra clicks will even be necessary compared to bfbc2

meh, i don't like overlay when I am in a game. I usually ignore them. To each their own though.

As others have said, this isn't a big issue. Gamers just like to complain.

I said this on another forum, but I'll say it here as well. People caring more about the digital service the game releases on than the actual games they are buying is ridiculous and they are completely missing the point of gaming. It's about the games, not the stupid download service. Even further, what do people expect other publishers to do, sit back and let Valve monopolize the market with their service? It's laughable that people are so enamored with Steam, yet when another company tries something similar they bitch and moan about how horrible it is.

Sorry, but as a digital download service Steam pretty much blows. D2D, Impulse, and GOG are all vastly superior for people who just want to download games and play. Hell, even Amazon.com has a better service. Steam is also directly responsible for Origin in it's new form thanks to all the PC gamers who think that every stupid little feature that Valve adds to Steam is cool, and has forced EA to add the same garbage to keep up.

So, yeah, if people want to complain about this stuff they should take it up with Valve. They're the ones trying to turn PC gaming into some closed system running through their software and other publishers are starting to realize they need to do something before it's too late. Blizzard's done this, now EA, and you can expect more publishers to do it in the near future.

Two words. Steam overlay.

Steam overlay works with non Steam games.
