A buddy o f mine has run into some odd performance issue of late, almost all of his games run at a crawl - BF 1942, AvP2

Out of curisoity I ran 3dMark01 and he scored about 5k

As far as I know he's got..


1.8ghz P4
eVGA Geforce FX 5200 Ultra
1gb ram, not sure what kind
XP home


Now, far as I could tell he's performance has nearly dropped in half since the last time I used his computer. Any ideas?

Haven't done driver updates, or anything like that in the last week either.

Thats extreamly slow i would surgest reinstalling the drivers, better yet with newer ones. There may very well be something in the background consuming resorces, also do a reduersy scan for spyware http://www.webattack.com/get/adaware.shtml

spyware? corrupted driver install? those are the two that spring to my mind immediately. of course, it could be a stick of RAM dying, but that seems unlikely (and before you say 512 megs wouldn't cause that kind of a performance drop, yes, if the stick is dying, it would kill performance).
