AMD' 7-series will likely lag behing nVidia's 6-series but as you said, AMD will have released a year ahead almost. Which means the only thing nVidia will have to compete with AMD's 7-series is the GTX500s. This is not a good thing at all. I imagine the 7970 will bring at least a 75% performance increase over the GTX580 at significantly lower power cunsumption, and probably a slightly lower price. Meaning nVidia will probably have to sell the GTX580 at a lower bracket which could eat into their profit. And AMD's 7990 or whatever they'll call it will have no competition at all as it'll easily be twice as fast as nVidia's GTX590 I'd imagine, or close to it at least.

I dunno, just doesn't seem like nVidia would allow for this. If they do I can only see a couple of things- they know the 680s will be that freaking amazing, as in G80 awesome or better. Or, they aren't as concerned with GPUs as they once were and are focusing more on other markets so falling behind here isn't such a worry for them.

Will be an interesting year that is for certain. :)

What you explained happened already with the 5870 coming out way before the 480.
