Hmm, if NV38 is being launched in mid-September, when is NV40 going to be launched? Surely not even NVIDIA would be crazy enough to "launch" their successor in November a mere few weeks later, would they?
Late Q1 2004 is my best guess, right next to r420.
Unfortunetly I'm going to be serving in the army at that time so I wont be able to follow this great battle upclose.:(

Since when was anyone on a 6 month cycle? Seriously.
NV30 "launch:" November 2002.
NV30 previews: End of January 2003.
NV30 availability: March 2003.
NV35 launch: May 2003.
NV35 availability: July 2003
NV38 launch: September 2003.
Doesn't look like much of a 6 month product cycle to me. As of a few weeks ago, insiders said NV40 would launch at Comdex this year, which would be November 2003.

Launch properly in November - Probably not. But I imagine they'd happily do some kind of paper launch or white paper on the technology then.
I thought someone said nv38 was scrapped or didn't exist..
ECTS is here already, and I see no nv38 announcement.. If its just a re-spin, then whats the point, it'll still have crap PS2.0 performance. More likely is they'll drop it, and go straight for nv40, to get a decent performing DX9 chip out.

That would be the right move in my opinion.

My guess:
NV38 and NV35 launch in September, ship in October. (Same with R360 and RV360.)
NV40 and R420 launch in late Feruary / early March, and ship in April / May.
This year's comdex won't see any new product announcements, but their may be some "technology" announcements, like PS/VS 3.0....

I agree with Joe, from everything I've been reading he sounds like he's got it bang on. :)
Aside from the bit about the NV35 launching in September? ;)
As i've said before, the NV38 is a spanner in the works for the NV40. I think the best we can hope for is some reviews to surface for Christmas (not before, it would damage NV38 sales), with availability late January.
This is all very strange given the apparent fact that the NV40 is on schedule, but perhaps they're deliberately factoring in a little extra time to allow for tweaking and respins (god, let's hope it doesn't take 5 again).
Comdex would have been a perfect time for them, since the NV40 would crush anything ATi had to offer for a couple of months. Oh well.

Is it just me or have the products that have come out this year been unexciting...

for most part, but the 9800 non pro is pretty good now, just not worth it unless you really care to break 20k marks and youd need one hell of an oced rig at that

there's no way I'm buying a graphics card from either company until Doom 3 is out and playable at 50+ fps! I don't see the point of buying a card to play today's games super fast with everything cranked, I care about tomorrow's games! I guess my 5200 will have to suffer (barely) running Half-Life 2 until next June. I'd like to have a super fast card to run all my games but I'm not dishing out money for something that may or may not run tomorrow's games. Hell the 5900 Ultra can't even do what it says! Tomb Raider seems to run like hell on it and runs better on ATI's card. The GPU of Tron 2.0, but it seems to run better on ATI also! lol...looks like they're using the wrong GPU man! I don't know, I don't really care about what company has been making better cards for years because at the moment they lost the battle. ATI is really getting up there and I'm looking more forward to their new card coming out soon then nvidia's. I can go 2 ways....ATI steps up to take what's theirs and takes over nvidia (like nvidia did to 3dfx) or nvidia comes back strong and keeps fighting and claims it's crown back. Either way I don't care as long as the card I buy runs eevrything smoothly without cheats and is at the top of the crop. I'm tired of nvidia is better than ati, ati is better than nvidia....at the moment ATI is the man... and I'm so tired.

I think this year has become a turning point in how company's release video cards . In the past it has been quantum jumps on a 6/12 month cycle but now it is small speed improvments every 3 months. Maybe that is why it seems unexciting, 300 small steps might seem a lot less than 20 big jumps, but you still get to where you are going and have more places to pick your entry point at.
I also do not see how nv38 or R360 can hurst nv40 / r420 sales. Ok, you might not get one, but you're an overclocker and worth diddly **** in the larger scheme of things. No the important people are the people who spec their Dell on the internet and have been given 3 options
slow card ( £0 extra )
medium card ( £120 extra )
fast card ( £200 extra ).
Now it don't matter what the cards are but if they are all nvidia or all Ati then that does matter. So the fast card at present is the 9800PRo, but if it is the nv38 then does the guy buying it care about nv40 in 2 months .. nope.
6 month / 12 month cycles gave everyone who was interested in graphics a nice little hard on twice a year, but for the other 99% of peoople buying they only got an improvent twice a year. Now when they buy their Dell they are closer to the last word in graphics 4 times a year. Nows that an improvement and who the hell cares about our rose tinted glasses or excitment factor level ?

Hm, i think this is what happend. I assure you this is completely hypotehtical!
Most people assumed that this years release schedule would be.
NV30 - NV35 - NV40
so then, lets say one nvidia employee whispers to someone "yeah, we are gonna relase our NEXT high end prodcut in setember (or whenever)"
who ever herd that rumor would probly assume "yipppiee nv40" but they didnt know that the NV38 was thrown infront of NV40, or the next high end product. So i feel it could be one big miscommunication.
NV30 - NV35 - *NV38* - NV40
It's worth noting that the NV38 wasn't a long term plan, unlike the NV35, and other similar refresh parts. So originally, it was almost certainly going to be the way you initially describe it.
i wonder if nvidia will drop the 'GeForce' brand within the next 18 months and use something else. i would think the availability of DirectX 10 and OpenGL 2.0 in 2004/2005 would warrant a new branding scheme.

AFAIK: Engineering wanted not to have the GeForce name for the NV30. Marketing refused.
Why would they accept now?

Maybe because the Geforce name got a bad rep with the NV30 architecture:p

Doubt it. If they'd scrap anything then, it'd be the FX part. Not the GeForce part, which still got a good reputation with a lot of non-hardcore gamers.
