View Full Version : Choice between two AMD CPU's for ITX build, need advice

I'm upgrading from a modded ITX Intel P4 2.8 GHz Northwood 2 GB DDR1 PC3200 ram Geforce FX 5600 Ultra 128 mb on an iWill ITX motherboard. I left the enthusiast world 7 years ago. :fanboy:

I bought a J&W MiniX 890GX-USB3 ITX motherboard and an Antec ISK300-65 ITX case. The Antec will be upgraded to a 135W external power brick. This motherboard supports max 95W TDP socket AM3 CPU's and runs 128 MB Radeon 4290 IGP. There is a half height PCI-E 16x slot available for a discrete video card. I also have 4 GB of PC3-10600 ram ready for this build.

There are two local AM3 CPU sellers. One is selling his AMD Phenom II X3 720 Black Edition Triple Core Processor AM3 2.8GHZ 7.5MB Cache 95W 45NM for $45.

The other is selling his AMD Phenom II X4 905E Processor AM3 2.5GHZ 8MB Cache 65W 45NM for $80.

I am going to use this computer for everyday use, watching 1080p movie rips, and also play Star Wars: The Old Republic and Diablo III.

Please advise, thanks.

The x3 should be more than enough cpu for your build...save the 35bucks for something else.

You may even be able to unlock that 720...to 4 cores

If you plan to game at all..you should look into a Llano APU with integrated 4870 quality graphics...the onboard video of that mobo will not be good for gaming at all.

I agree the AMD Phenom II X3 720 Black Edition will be plenty for what you are running .Only running bemchmarks would you see a difference ,but in nearly all games the three core will be plenty,Like was said alot of times you can unlock the extra core ,but even if you can't the three cores will be enough.I would have went with a bigger case so you could put a bigger power supply in it .135watts is not much.I would get a cpu with the lowest TDP .

Just to update I ended up missing both CPU's sales and ended up with an AMD X4 910E for $100. With a 135 W power supply at full load:

CPU 65 W
ITX motherboard 10 W (minus ?? W when IGP disabled with a discrete video card)
1 stick of 4 GB DDR3 sodimm 3 W
slim DVDRW 5 W
2.5" 500 GB 7200 RPM HD 5 W
2x 80 mm fans 3 W

So I have 50 W to play with. Only a low profile video card can fit this mini-ITX case. Was hoping for a 6670 DDR5, but I might have to reduce it to a 6570 DDR3.
