There is a decent chance that either Nvidia, ATI, or perhaps even both companies, will have *some* technology in PS3. or they may lend Sony their assistance and/or IP. Probably in certain areas that Sony SUX in, such as rasterizing & image quality.

PS3 will most definitally NOT have an Nvidia or ATI designed graphics processor though. it will be a Sony designed and owned chip, most likely based on Cell, as described in the Sony patent. what I am talking about is the Visulizer graphics chip (GPU actually it seems) that compliments the BroadBand Engine CPU. Both are based on Cell.

Within the Visualizer GPU described in the patent, there are Pixel Engines, Image Caches and CRTCs (cathode ray tube controller) which forms the "back end" of the GPU. meaning the rasterizing part. at the front end, there are PUs (PPC CPU cores) and APUs, similar to the CPU. It is the back end of this Visualizer GPU, those area's I just mentioned, where Nvidia or ATI *might* contribute. I would say Sony NEEDS Nvidia or ATI techology and/or their assistance, because with PS2, Sony proved themselves to be far behind the latest PC graphics chips in features and in quality,
even though PS2's Graphics Synthesizer had a bandwidth
(48 GB/sec eDRAM) and parallelism (16 pipelines) advantage over PC GPUs released in 2000 when PS2 came out.

Make note of this again though: there is almost NO chance that you will see a whole Nvidia or ATI GPU/VPU in PS3, in the same way that we have an Nvidia GPU in Xbox, or will have a future ATi VPU in NGC's successor, and ATi VPU in Xbox 2.

Sony designs its graphics chip in-house, with *some* outside assistance in design & manufacturing.

if there is any sony / ati / nvidia association, it will not be major in anyway. i can see the scenario where the graphics chip maker(s) would act as consultant in their respective field(s) of expertise. in the end, however, the playstation 3 is all sony.

And IBM ;) but thats where it ends and i thought it was stupid to even think Sony would sue an other 3rd part company.
