I have both Pro and Ultra cards, and even in this case the answer is STILL yes.

Throw some real DirectX 9 stuff with all settings maxed at it to see the real difference

Outperform is an understatement. Mauls, massacres, decimates...those are closer.

Obliterates..yes..that's the word

The 5900 Ultra is essentially equal with the 9800 PRO, so the 5900 non-Ultra would obviously be slower. One area that Nvidia cards seem to suffer is PS 2.0 support.

Between the non-ultra and the 9800Pro? Uhmmm,..it is a bit less than Grand Canyon wide, but not much.

9800pro and 5900ultra are roughly comparable in current games. The tie-breaker is image quality, which goes to the 9800pro. The 5900 non-ultra is behind the 9800pro in speed and image quality.

For the quickly arriving pixel shaded games, the 9800 series completely humiliates the fx cards.

Have you tried a 5900?

10% faster now counts as "Obliterates"? Where were you people when the TI500 "totally obliterated" the 8500?

Bingo! Looking at raw numbers in current games, the 5900 and 9800 Pro are pretty well-matched. However once you turn up the FSAA and anisotropic filtering, the performance and image quality lead goes to the 9800. I'd say get the 9800, if it doesn't work for you or you simply don't like it then get the 5900.

ONE person? Seems like the general concensus is that the 9800 pro greatly outperforms an FX5900 non-ultra by a huge margin. Here's some quotes:

Must be the same croud that upgraded from a 9700 to a 9800 to get that whooping %10-%20 performence boost with no extra features. Granted, the 9800pro is faster then the FX5900, but you people are acting like it makes some HUGE difference in-game. Are you REALLY going to notice the difference between 62 FPS and 68 FPS?

I think we're all refering to the 2-3 times faster the ATi cards are running the DX9 stuff at. ;)

2-3 times faster? I've seen two benchmarks that test DX9 speed: one showed the 9800pro coming out 25% faster, the other %35 faster. Obviously, the 9800pro had a big advantage there, but since there's been roughly 3 released games that use DX9 features, and at most half of upcoming games that will use it, it shouldn't be solely refered to when talking about OVERALL speed. But we won't really be able to tell the full difference until some REAL DX9 games come out, not just games that use DX9 for slightly fancier water. If on those games the FX5900 really comes in at 2-3 times slower then the 9800, I'll agree with you. Until then, I'm not willing to say that the margin will be THAT wide.

The more I research the differences between the NV5900 & ATI9800 the more I'm convinced NV is way behind times. What is the problem Nvidia!Maybe its a NFORCE 3 thing but I dont know.
Ca'nt wate to see ATI logo in HL2 hopefully. THE WAY ITS REALLY MEANT TO BE PLAYED!
