View Full Version : Whats with ATI and Exposure..?
As some of you may know (most likely not) i recently nabbed myself a 9800 Pro and was looking through some of their tech demo and also some of the tech stuff on their site and noticed...
why do they have this strange obcession with the concept of exposure? you know when they have tech demos rendered in four separate views or something with one over exposed, one underexposed and correct exposure etc...
WTF does this have to do with graphics? theres no such thing in this context surely?
i just dont understand why they try to draw parallels between graphics and professional photography...
anybody else pondered this?

Links to the stuff you're talking about?
im looking for the stuff on their site...
a good example would be the RNL Devenbec Orbs tech demo - the one with the shiny globes n stuff...
http://www.ati.com/developer/images/ATI-9700-nl-lg.jpg
..still looking...
Update: found another example...
http://www.ati.com/vortal/r300/dx9demo/main.html
its the DX 9 demo for the 9700.... go to section 13 of this flash demo...
see what i mean?

I believe it's to demonstrate how the various features of the card all add to the final image, and what the image would look like without specific features.
It's just a bragging rights thang. ;)

yeah, but in the tech demos where they've done that, what relevance does it have? other than they evidently have some sort of filter which makes an image look over exposed? (and what help is that to anyone?)
all im getting at is that it seems to me that theyre implying that they deal with things like exposure..... which simply isnt true. it just makes it seem alot more professional than it is...
Note: on the DX9 demo, they bring in the exposure thing in the context of an "enhanced 32-bit frame buffer format". Great! Whats that got to do with exposure?
My argument is really rather petty, but its just kinda insulting your intelligence when they put such rubbish like that on there...

um hello....
It takes High Dynamic range color rendered on the fly PER PIXEL to get that photo realistic affect. What exactly do you think the idea behind Floating point color processing is anyway... To do simple bump mapping on all the walls in Quake?
im not talking about high dynamic range.
using the orbs demo (the one in the pic), enabling/disabling high dynamic range stuff is a completely separate thing to the 'Exposures' view
i would put a pic up, but it doesnt seem to let me take screens from within the demo.

At a second glance, you're right the exposures thing is to do with High Dynamic Range
Its just strange that they spin it as the conventional concept of what 'exposure' is, making it seem like theyre using methods to compensate for an image already offset by being over/underexposed.
...whereas what they actually mean is that they have a method of making something look under/overexposed (or adding a very slight overexposed effect to achieve this photo-realistic-ish affect...)
Why dont they just explain what High Dynamic Range is then, instead of putting stuff that morons like me would get confused about? :p

Well they are demonstrating what you can do with new features of directx
such as
you can have a car that looks like every other game, pritty boreing. or you can have curves and bumps on it useing bump mapping or osmething.

wasnt that one in question a demonstration of Normal Mapping, not what we're talking about?

ps.. from now on, in an effort to preserve any credibility i will pose any statements as questions instead :D
