The Rev. Al Sharpton cautioned the Democratic Party that it can't treat black voters as its "mistress" and rebuked rap artists for lyrics that that degrade black women.

The fiery New York preacher and Democratic presidential candidate told a dinner for executives from minority construction companies Saturday that the patience blacks have for the party was about at an end.

"We must not be in a relationship with a Democratic Party that takes us for granted. We must no longer be the political mistresses of the Democratic Party," Sharpton told the audience attending the first awards banquet for the Central Virginia Business and Construction Association.

"A mistress is where they take you out to have fun but they can't take you home to mama and daddy. Either we're going to get married in 2004 or we're going to find some folks who ain't ashamed to be seen with us," he said.

Sharpton has trailed among the eight Democratic candidates in recent polls in Iowa and South Carolina, but hopes to find a boost in February primaries in Southern states with sizable black voting blocs.

Sharpton also denounced what he called "negro amnesia" among a generation of black people who had forgotten the sacrifices of people who were jailed, beaten and even killed for their involvement in the civil rights movement 40 to 50 years ago.

He took particular aim at rap artists whose violent lyrics refer to women in derogatory terms.

"To think that we have come down dangerous alleys, that we have traveled through the backwoods of terror, that we have survived beatings, been shot down in cold blood doesn't give you the right to call your mama a *****," Sharpton said.

The man is quite skilled at weaving race-warfare into his political agenda.

In his defense, he did say two good things

rebuked rap artists for lyrics that that degrade black women

Sharpton also denounced what he called "negro amnesia" among a generation of black people who had forgotten the sacrifices of people who were jailed, beaten and even killed for their involvement in the civil rights movement 40 to 50 years ago.

I can't say I've heard of anyone who thinks of Sharpton as "the voice of black America". But every so often he says something that actually makes some sense, right after that he shoves his foot in his mouth *sighs*

I can't believe this guy is still trying to place the race card, both parties are as bad as each other for "using" minorities.

During the Democratic Debate on FOX NEWS yesterday, Al Sharpton made some very remarkable points and often times took control of the debate floor due to the protestors (that seemed only to speak up whenever Dick Gephardt or Joe Lieberman opened their sorry pie holes). :)

He then took the Democrats to the woodshed claiming that there's either going to be a serious marriage between the black community and the Democratic party or there's going to be a big divorce, and that's something I've been saying for many years now. If a divorce between the black community and Democrats happen, they will not go to the Republican party - that's a given. I don't think they'll ally themselves with the green party either. That leaves only two alternatives - the Reform Party or the Libertarian party.

Al Sharpton last night sounded like a closet Libertarian!!

Maybe it's just me, though! :)

i have read the article and i still wonder why you say both parties when it is very obvious that the left is the only side that retains a large position on ANY minority.

Both sides will quite obviously try to influence voters by cuddling up to minorties

Understand now? :p

using and trying to gain votes are very different things.
