ALBANY, New York (AP) -- On the first anniversary of the terrorist attacks, a date known as 9-11, the evening numbers drawn in the New York Lottery were 9-1-1.
"The numbers were picked in the standard random fashion using all the same protocols," said lottery spokeswoman Carolyn Hapeman. "It's just the way the numbers came up."
Lottery officials won't know until Thursday morning how many people played those numbers or the total payout, she said.

Let me help you:
Wall Street had been shocked on the eve of the anniversary when the Standard & Poor's 500 futures contract closed at 911.00.
There was a buzz on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange stock index futures trading floor about why that happened, but there were no reports of collusion or price-fixing.

Has anyone seen the movie "Pi"?
It's about how you could make up any random number and find it all over the place if you're looking for it, or "aware" of it.
Same thing with 911? I don't know...

umm, this wasn't just some lottery in who knows where, this was the new york lottery, and the numbers were in this order: 9-1-1, with no numbers preceeding, following, or contained within. i'd say that's pretty weird.
i'd also say that it'd be weird any day of any year, but it happened on 9-11 on the 1 year anniversary. :p

I know what you mean, but technically (according to CNN) the odds of that happening were 1 in 1000. The same odds as for any specific number on any given day.
Of course, the numbers 911 have a meaning which makes this very weird, but the odds were still the same.

yeah, the odds were not that big, but if this drawing was held every day, those numbers would only show up once every 3 years...
Cereal Killer understands.
Just a coincidence... on that day , if you looked for numerical results of random events there would have been millions of random numbers in existence in newyork, the fact that one of them was 911 is no big deal.... I mean nobody made a huge deal over all the events that weren't 911... "breaking news story, a pair of twins were born simultaneously at exactly 9-12 this morning...." eerrr so what?

i think the signifigance of it is that the saying "your chances are better at winning the lottery" comes into effect. in this case, that is exactly what happened.
It was a 3 digit random number... hardly unbelievable.
