Claims by teenage boys in Tennessee that they were acting out the Grand Theft Auto game when they shot at vehicles are threatening to put the US entertainment industry back on trial.

Lawyer Jack Thompson has taken up the case and plans to sue the makers of Grand Theft Auto, saying they should bear some responsibility for the death of Aaron Hamel, a 45-year-old nurse and the injuries caused.

Oh for christ sake, the kids were morons and they had pathetic parents who should have never had kids. The game is in no way to blame, if a parent cannot see their child has a slight problem like wanting to shoot people they are morons. The kids who did this are to blame and NOTHING else, it's just a escuse those two scum bags are trying to use to get a lighter sentance.

What the hell is wrong with some people, why can't they accept and place the blame where it belongs:rolleyes:

Edit: Take a look at the moron lawyers site (http://www.stopkill.com/)

Yeah, it's funny how they blame games but not bad parenting. Which is THE MAIN REASON for this kind of thing.

pathetic.

GTA3 has sold so many copies, that if it did genuinely make gamers want to go and shoot cars and other stunts copied from the game, frankly we'd see far more of it happening. What a lot of people (outside games) fail to grasp is that people enjoy games like GTA3 because it's exactly the sort of activity they wouldn't do in real-life.

It's never going to change though, video games are always going to shoulder the blame for incidents like this.

My 6 year old son is hooked on GTA:VC, yet I don't expect him to go capping nobody on the highway!

Sheesh, he even keeps telling me it's ok that he shoots people because it's just a game and it's not real life and explains that in this game he's a bad guy and it's kind of fun to pretend you're a bad guy once in a while for fun but it doesn't mean you are in real life. (I actually had that conversation with him last night pretty much verbatim, I got a lot of reservations about him playing it but he's hooked and he raises some excellent points. ;) )

Ugh, i hate when this kind of bull happens.

How bout we blame the media for giving idiots the impression that they can make up insane accusations and get public attention from the media!

Haha, anyone remember how the victims of the Comumbine shootings were trying to sue the makers of FINAL FANTASY 7 because it was one of the games the shooters played? It's obvious these lawsuits are just to point the blame at someone else. I mean seriously parents, the game is rated M, so if your kids are playing it you should know. I wouldn't doubt that in this case the parents BOUGHT the game for their kids, that happens very often with GTA.

And then why blame movies?

It's always been this way. Parents wanting to dodge their responsibility for their kids. The thing that's changing is the target. It was once the hardrock music that was the problem. Now people have lived with that kind of music for a long time and many parents today have grown up with it. So the target changes to violent movies. And now that most people are used to violent movies, then the target changes to games. And if we go back in time, we see the same pattern before too. In the 60's it was sex that was going to ruin the youth. And even longer ago it was dancing that destroyed the young generation. There is always something to blame on, and there's always an older generation that can't take that times are changing and their kids are doing things that they never did.

Whats scary is when those older generations can still vote, and affect our lives adversley.

When you hit 60 you should have a yearly "lost your marbles yet?" test to detirmine whether or not you understand the world enough to share it with the kickass young folk

I think I'd fail that one...

On the matter, I think parents can only resort to blaming games because they are bad parents and don't want to admit the fact that they are not able to properly educate their children...

Take dig's case for example... his kid says it's fun playing the bad guy and whatnot... he's not raving around in his room putting together a rifle to go outside and shoot people.

And another thing, what better way to avoid conviction than saying "I've been brainwashed by a violent video game!"? Bring on the parents (stupid, may I add. not you dig ;))/oldish people for support...

And ANOTHER thing: Did you know FPS shooters actually increases your sight awareness, or something like that? I've read various articles on that a couple of months ago. It says video games, especially FPS, increase the level of awareness and your "field of vision", so to speak. I'll see if I can find some links.

And YET ANOTHER thing: You've got to have a REALLY facked-up mind to simply got out and start shooting people because it seemed like fun in the video game.

(Sorry for all the "other things", I was writing as it came to mind...)

One thing I find provocative is that the arguments many of you are using here could easily be used to defend AGAINST gun control.

Most people that own guns don't kill PEOPLE with them, just like most people that play violent video games don't necessarily run out and kill someone.

Remember: final fantasy doesn't kill people, people kill people. ;)

On the other hand the purpose of games isn't to kill, it's to entertain, so there's a clear difference.

Out of curiousity, how old were you when she did?

I taught my son how to use mods in GTA:VC last night and he's having a ball swapping cars now. :D

This is a case of a bunch of inbred, backwater rednecks wanting to make a quick buck. I say throw out the case and order vasectomies for the lot of 'em so the stupidity ends here.
