Here's the linkage. (www.gearboxsoftware.com)

It's due in stores on Sept. 30th... that's going to be a busy week/weekend! Hopefully we'll be hearing from Vivendi soon concerning HL2's release date!

I'm buying this as soon as I get the money. I played single player to death on Xbox, but the multiplayer mode and added content make it worth it.

Hmm, looks like gamers are going to have a choice on the 30th, between these two products:

Yeah, I played Halo as much as I could on the Xbox (don't own an Xbox), but this is still gonna make my day. Halo MP is some of the best out there and the ability to mod that sucker is driving me nuts - I can't think of anything to do to it! I'd like to see a remake of Marathon w/the Halo engine...but I don't have a Mac, so I can't play Marathon to make the conversion.

As far as HL2 comparisions, I think it's safe to say that both of them are games, and that they're both scheduled to ship on the 30th. I've even heard rumors that there might be a mouse and keyboard involved with one (maybe both!!)

Seriously, how can we make comparisons between two games that haven't shipped?

Kidding aside, they're both going to be great games. Both are definitely worth your money (or my money, at least).

HERESY!

(it's an early FPS that was released only for Mac. basically, it had a Badass Plot in addition to Fun with FPS Stuff.. and It Was Good. Marathon 2 was released for PC and you can grab it at The Underdogs. I know I have.)

Marathon is the only video game that has a story that I actually like to sit down and read every now and again (can be found here: http://marathon.bungie.org/story ). It's down right now; try and check it out when it comes back up. That site has the story to all 3 games - check them all out, 'cause they're all very good.

Also, Marathon was released in the Doom era, however the engine was MUCH more advanced (true 3d environments, triggers, angled surfaces, etc.). Actually, it almost seems like the only early FPS that WASN'T truely 3d was Doom. System Shock also had full 3d environments, and had a lot of more advanced elements as well (probably one of the first games where you could crouch and lean). My friend (who used to be a Mac freak) was telling me how amazing Marathon was for it's time. They later released Marathon Infinity, the last game in the Marathon series, with a level editor. It sounds like it was very easy to work with and very versitile, probably at least as much as Quake (though characters and guns were only 2d). Would've been interesting to see what could've happened if they released Marathon on the PC at the same time as Doom.

Oh, and one guy was saying that Halo is kind of a "sequel" to Marathon, is there any truth to that? I haven't read the story for Marathon, but do the two games take place in the same universe? It would be cool if it did, they could really make it all into one huge story.

BTW, anyone remember when Halo was origionally going to be an RTS? I got a "Evolution of Halo" video off of some site, it's pretty funny how the game advanced over the years. Not to mention the team's comments during the video ("That's what happens when your lead is a crack addict...":D )

Yup, that's the video! Damn funny too, everyone should download it to get a little "video game history".

Yes, Halo is the in Marathon universe (the character you play in Marathon is almost certianly a Mjolnir mark IV - the Master Chief is a mark V). The two stories intertwine in interesting ways. For example, Durandal (the central AI in the Marathon games) and Cortana are in some way related.

After reading the Marathon story page (if you need a refresher), check out:

http://halo.bungie.org/story/

Loads of cool stuff there. :)

Yeah, my previous title was "Mjolnir-class cyborg" :D

I saw that - should've mentioned it somewhere, but never quite got around to it. And it's always good to run into fellow Bungie minions. :afro2:

Damn, this thread made me pull out my copy of Marathon and install it on my old Powermac.

The good ol' days.....*sigh*

Bah, now I'm interested in this game too, but I have no Mac. Anyone know of a decent Mac emulator out there that would work with this game (it wouldn't need to be very fast, this game runs on a 33mhz Mac processor!)? I think my friend actually owns a copy of Marathon (for the Mac, of course). Now I kinda wanna check it out to get more of the backstory from Halo (I've already read the book, might as well get more info from anything that I can!).

Oh, and Baron, you seem to be changing your title like every couple days now.;)

I haven't played Marathon, but if you figure out how to make it work on a PC, let me know. I'll by me a Bungie Action Sack.

Edge, go check those links I posted to the Marathon and Halo story pages. While you won't get to play the game, they do show the terminal screens that the game uses to tell its story. And it's certainly worth the read! Especially after you get through Marathon (and its sequels if you like) and into the Marathon Connections section on the Halo story page - that stuff will blow your mind! :)

Edge

Yeah I checked out some of those, but it's gonna take me a while to go through them all! Who would've thought such an early FPS would have so much story/reading elements (especially when the only reading you had to do in Doom was the title screen!). But they do sound very interesting, I like the way that both the Master Cheif and the guy from Marathon seem to be led around by an AI companion, AIs seem really cool now:)

I'm looking forward to reading the Marathon/Halo connections, I'm really interested in that kind of thing. I'm just so suprised that out of the 3 million+ Halo players out there, so few seem to know that Marathon was basicly a prequel. Wonder if they're going to make Halo a triligy as well, and then move onto another FPS set in the same universe...that would be cool!
