Hi all, this is my first post here, not really a noob tho.
I would like to know the difference between the Quadro fx 3000 and the fx 5900.
I've heard they are both 5900 based but use different drivers. If that's true, then I wonder why the fx5900 is under $400 and the Quadro fx3000 is almost $2000?
Anyone ever gamed on the Quadro fx 3000?

Thanks

But that is a very old document, is it not? Have not many of the features they list as only available on Quadro cards made its way to the FX5900? Such as stereo, anti - aliased lines etc.

I can't see any other benefits than the application certification, but please correct me if I am wrong.

Hello, the Quadro Seires of cards are for people who use their computer for Work, and use industrial applications. Some of these applications include:

AutoCad
Mya
Xsi
3d Studio Max
Photoshop

If you are not creating content, you have no need for one of those cards.

Infact, for GAMEING, a Quadro card will be SLOWER than their Geforce counterpart, this is due to a lower clock speed, and diffrent drivers.

Thx for your reply.
My problem is this, My client is hell bent on
a Viewsonic VP2290b LCD that has resolution of 3840 x 2400, and the Quadro FX 3000 is the only card I know of that can do that resolution.
I don't think he games much and I can't talk him out of that monitor.
I could add water cooling and oc it a bit, but I'd really hate eating a $2000 card.

Oh man, id kill for that monitor!

Yes, then he definatly dose need a professonial card. Gameing may be a joke, unless he plays windowed mode or at a lower resolution.

the quadro 3000 series offers some good features for ultra large displays like that.

edit matrox also has a solution

http://www.matrox.com/mga/products/p_hr256/home.cfm

but i think its a 64bit pci card????????!!!!!

id call matrox or email them asking for help to make sure it works.

The T221/VP2290b works with 980XGL, FX1000, FX2000, and FX3000.

Anyways, i do have a quesiton, i belive you said that you get tearing between the two sides of your lcd? or something?

Dosent hte fx3000 have some feature to 'framelock' them in? or was that the expensive one?

I personally have experience with the FX2000. The 2 DVI heads are genlocked when connected to the T221. Supposedly the other cards I mentioned should genlock the 2 heads also since they are recommended by IBM.

The FX3000G lets you genlock multiple graphics cards. This would be cool if you want to use 4x FX3000G (and 4 PCs) to drive a T221 using 1920x1200x4 mode.

By the way, IBM has a newer rev of the T221 called T221-DG5. This model supports 48Hz@3840x2400 for motion picture applications. It also comes with a dual-link DVI to 2x single-link DVIs. The FX2000 and FX3000(G) all have a dual-link DVI output.

I would like to see a nice workstation 'setup' that has 4 pc's with fx3000g and the new ibm monitor, that would be sweet.

What os would hanlde this? I would assume anyting that had Xwindows, since it is a network protocall after all? Or can somehow windows support it heh.

The Deep View project at IBM Research uses a Linux cluster to run a parallel OpenGL renderer. The final image is combined by a custom piece of hardware. Maybe they can use the FX3000G instead of the custom box. See link here:

Caltech has a similar project called Terascale Visualization Workstation: http://viz.cacr.caltech.edu/projects/teraviz-workstation/

I don't think some of the features that NVIDIA listed are really valid on modern GPUs. For example, in the fixed function pipeline, the diffuse contribution is clamped to [0, 1], while a similar operation is performed for the specular contribution is . All you would have to do is duplicate the fixed function pipeline in a shader, but alter it to take the absolute value of the diffuse contribution and simplify specular shader. This would most likely result in a simpler shader (unless using lit() is faster). The other advantage of this is that once you've written a 2 sided lighting per vertex shader, you could easily extend it to a 2 sided lighting per pixel shader.

I have a Quadro FX 3400... it rocks on games! Quadro cards do not need to have the clock speed that Geforce Cards have because most of the graphics are done by hardware. Geforce Cards are done by the driver. You can bet that quadro cards do about the same as geforce cards when it comes to gaming.

PC Spec's:

Dell Precision WorkStation 670
Intel 3.6GHz XEON Processors
RedHat Enterprise Workstation version 3
nVidia Quadro FX 3400
2GB RAM
73GB Cheetah 15K RPM

Unless you're an ULTRA PROFESSIONAL 3D user who needs critical 3D app certification, I do recommend the Geforce over the Quadro. Mod the 5950 into a Quadro. Better yet quadro mod a Geforce 6800.

think about all that money difference
