if you were to choose between Geforce FX 5200 (128mb)
and Geforce Ti 4200 (64mb)

which one would you go for? which one will perform better in gaming?

just as simple as that.
please don't suggest other cards, since these two are my only possibilities.

thanks.

GF4 Ti 4200.
It's faster. Sure, the FX 5200 supports DX9, but it's WAY too slow at it - so unless you want it for development purposes ( and then you might be better off with a Quadro anyway... ) , Ti4200 is by far the best option

Yep, GF4Ti 4200. It's a great card. Something you might want to remember : if you plan on playing 3D games on your computer, always avoid low-end cards, they're not worth their price (for your information, the 4200 is just an underclocked (ex-)high-end 4600 (both share the same nv25 GPU) whereas the 5200 is basically a low-end card). The 4200 won't render any DX9 effect, but DX8 (and 8.1) games will run fine. The 5200 will lag in both DX8 and DX9 (compared to the 4200).

Grab that Ti4200 and overclock it. You'll probably get a late stepping of the chip and be able to clock it to near Ti4600 levels. While the GF4 Ti only does DirectX 8, it does that exceptionally well.

Recently I was undecided between a Geforce4 Ti4200 and the FX 5600. Unlike the 5200, the 5600 is actually worth considering. ;) The 5200 not only slower, but missing several features which makes the FX line different from the GF4 line.

I went with the 4200. From looking at the reviews and comparisons of each, I decided that the added DX9 capabilities just were not worth the overall lower performance in non-DX9 games. Also the 5600 was slightly more expensive.

In short: GF4 for sure.

Good choice... Nvidia still rocks in DX8 cards Far better than the 8500/9100/9200

rather than the GF4TI4200 64mb, check out the refurbished section of http://www.newegg.com . They have a variety of GF4TI4200 128ddr and GF4TI4800 128ddr video cards that are less than $100us! That's a damn good deal ;)

And I agree with everyone else, the FX5200 is bleh :p
