Yes. R400 was canned a long time ago. R420 is taking its place. So no, they are not going straight to R500. They will release R420 in the stead of the original R400.

Much of what was being designed for the R400 will be incorperated into the R500. The design was just too much for the near future.

Sonofa... Q4 2004 for the next real architectural update?? So all we get is R360 until then? That is the suxor... Looks like the 9700 pro will be sitting in my machine for a LOT longer than I had anticipated.
On the bright side I suppose I'll get to spend my money on CPU/motherboard upgrades instead. :)

No.
R420: Q1 2004
R500: Q4 2004 or slightly later.

Thankyou for the clarification.
One question, if anyone is prepared to field it.
With regard to the upcoming titles Doom 3 and HL2, where will my current system (see sig) be hurting the most? In other words, would I be better served around Q1 upgrading my video card to a 9900 or replacing my CPU/motherboard?
If by "9900" you actually mean the R360, it's not going to be worth it really. If you mean the R420, then it would be a great upgrade.
Half-Life 2 is pretty CPU intensive, so it could be worth looking what's around Q1 2004. Athlon64 and Pentium5 (Prescott), in other words. But frankly, your system isn't going to be punished in any area, since it's pretty top of the line.

Thanks Paul. Only thing to keep in mind is that I like to run in 1600x1200. My LCD has that for it's native resolution, thus my preference for that resolution. I usually play with no AA or AF enabled though, in order to save performance. Still looks good to me... I'm just not sure my system will handle HL2 and Doom3 in 1600x1200 even with AA and AF turned off. I suppose I could always just wait and see, then make a move if I need to.
1600x1200 is going to be a struggle on even the R360, although you can probably pull it off if you're willing to sacrifice some details. If you want that kind of resolution with everything maxed (minus high AA/AF), you'll have to wait for the next generation, January 2004 onwards.
CPU isn't that important at that resolution btw, so go for video card over processor.
