Contrary to some remarks on this forum, the NV38 will see the light of day. There are pictures shown at Tom's Hardware here NV38 pic (http://www.tomshardware.com/business/20030922/computex_1-06.html)

They got FlowFX back on this card...hehe!

Cheers.

The Dig sits back on the sofa and waits for the photochopping fun to commence.

No, no....loud fans are cool now, remember? It's a "status thing" among us geeks, nVidia already said so! ;)

can anyone see if the fan is open to the case, or if its closed in, so it just sucks the air in a stright line? from the front end of the case to the back?

Yeah. I wonder where those ideas of the NV38 getting canned came from

Well.. I believe they came from you. I know that what I said about the Nv38 being canned was based on comments i read (i think from you) on another forum.

Its to bad they are still launchning the Nv38. ITs obviously a stupidly overclocked Nv35 with another Dustbuster. Its going to get hammered by teh R360 in the same things the Nv35 is. Perhaps more.

I'm not sure what you based your comments on. Perhaps I wasn't clear at a time...
Speaking of canceling stuff, I did hear a VERY strange, but only midly reliable thing, in relation to that.

Not like that matters anymore. ( see: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?s=&threadid=18455 )

Actually it came from someone else in this thread here (http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?s=&threadid=18304)

Cheers.

Why are you so darn religious about this stuff I dont get it, who cares if it is stupidly overclocked. Everything points to a quieter fan btw. Do you have nightmares about NV coming to eat your pets or something, or did NV fire you or a loved one at some point?

teh win!! (JeffK is leet you know)

Does anybody have an idea when the NDA will be lifted on the NV36 or NV38? I keep seeing posts that Nvidia was gonna show something at Computex, but it's been three days and nothing about the NV36/38 has been announced.

Cheers.

I think they were going to show those cards "behind closed doors" which is what seems to have happened. I bet reviewers already have the cards under NDA. No idea when that expires, but since HL2 was pushed back their's no hurry...

Any news on whether they were able to add anymore features over the basic respin, such as additional temporary registers?

How many registers does it need? Existing NV3x cards take a small penalty on the second register, and the penalty increases with every register used thereafter.

More than the exiting NV3x cards have now? ;) That's probably the penalty you're talking about--it doesn't have enough temporary registers so the more you use the more you're penalized.

I'm sure NV3x has more than one register. And since every additional register used has an increasing penalty I'm not sure lack of registers is the problem.

Why does everyone consider NV3x chips stupidly overclocked? if anything I'd say they are significantly underclocked (remember the NV30 was designed for a low K dielectric process). I'd guess 750 mhz is actually close to where nVidia wanted to be with NV30 - the dust buster makes a lot more sense at these type of speeds and it explains a lot about why NV3x has shader performance issues. NV3x was designed a lot like the P4 - to run a very high clock rates, but the failure of the Black Diamond low k process effectively stalled the design.

The NV30 was never designed to be released at over 500Mhz, and halfway through development the target was put down to 400Mhz. Marketing decided not to care and increase the voltage though, thinking it'd let them get the performance crown. That also resulted in awful yields.

You may recalll the Merryl-Lynch analysis straight after the launch of NV30 where the opinion was expressed that the core was conservatively clocked.

Of course, for heat reasons nVidia could not go much higher on bulk silicon, but if low k had worked as intended there was definitely more performance to be had.
