Om Malik (http://gigaom.com/cloud/taking-on-amazon-google-launches-compute-on-demand-rival-to-ec2/?utm_source=social&utm_medium=twitter&utm_campaign=gigaom) writes that Google has announced plans to offer a compute-on-demand service similar to Amazon‚??s Elastic Compute (EC2) service.

Google has offered many what it calls higher-level cloud services such Google storage, BigQuery and Google App Engine in the past, but now the company believes it needs to sell a more prosaic Infrastructure as a Service (IAAS) offering whose primary target is attracting more developers to Google‚??s cloud platform.

Google says that Compute Engine has access to 770,000 cores and that number will surely grow over time.¬*Google‚??s product page (http://cloud.google.com/products/compute-engine.html) is citing HPC as a use case, and they‚??ve published a case study on early adopters (http://static.googleusercontent.com/external_content/untrusted_dlcp/cloud.google.com/en/us/files/ComputeISBCaseStudy.pdf) at the Institute for System Biology.
