As the sports cliche goes, "father time is undefeated." Apparently it holds true within Internet culture as well, as time took down several major websites last night.

By now you've read about the "leap second (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leap_second#History)." It's the occasional, necessary time recalibration caused by the Earth's irregular rotation (Google has a brief explainer (http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2011/09/time-technology-and-leaping-seconds.html) plus an outline of how they deal with it). This rotation causes various timekeeping methods to slowly get out of sync with "solar time," and then even the most accurate clocks in the world need a readjustment. The leap second concept itself was introduced in 1972, and 25 leap seconds have occurred since.

Almost exactly 24 hours ago, the Internet faced the most recent one. It didn't go so well.
