9600 Pro -vs- FX 5600 Ultra

ATI Radeon 9600 Pro --or-- Nvidia GeForceFX 5600 Ultra

Can anyone give me their opinion as to which card is superior overall? I'm not looking for hard data and frame rate charts -- i just want to know if both cards will be able to play Splinter Cell, Half-Life 2, Halo, Doom 3, and MaxPayne2 with decent graphics.

I'm leaning towards the Nvidia but I'm concerned about the additional power supply needed. I've also read that the 9600 Pro has advantages with DirectX9.

I've got a Gateway, P4 2.0GHz, 512DDR Ram, XP, fairly new setup.

For most games you can get today, both should be a good card. The ATI is a bit better with the IQ. However with DX9 stuff, its the 9600 all the way. Halo for the PC and TR:AOD games that are out (well halo's gold it will be out next week) will use DX9 and thus you will get night and day difference. Other games that use DX9, like HL2, should also run much faster on the 9600. Thus, 9600 is a better buy.

Id go for the 9600 Pro,

However, ATi is releaseing a refresh of it with Much higher clock speeds very soon, id hold off buying one till the 30th.

ATI Radeon 9600 Pro its from 2 to 5 times faster then FX 5600 Ultra in DX9 games ;) , heck its even faster in full dx 8.1 games :D
