View Full Version : UT2003 performance boost tips
here are few tips:
- use 16-bit, doesnt differ much from 32bit and huge FPS boost(i think)
- turn off unit shadows
- turn off dynamic light
- use "software acceleration" for sound

Actually, they probably won't boost performance that much--it's really CPU limited...

I am not going back to 16-bit color. Is it just me or does 16-bit color just seem nasty nowadays?
Besides...this demo runs pretty well for me.

Even if they DO speed up the game, ALL of those will kill image quality.

using the software sound instead of hardware sound gave me a 25fps increase boost on my gf4 ti4600 and many others as well. It went from "playable" but not smooth to smooth as silk when i changed it from hardware to software...it was a HUGE increase.

You have to be running the latest drivers from creative for your Audigy. The problem is stated very clearly in the release notes.
3.2 Sound issues
----------------
If using a 3D sound accelerator such as the Sound Blaster Audigy series sound card, you can go into "Options/Audio" to enable EAX 3.0 by selecting the "Hardware 3D Sound + EAX" options.
You need to upgrade to the latest version of Sound Blaster Audigy drivers in order to get acceptable 3D sound performance.
Using Unreal Tournament 2003 in conjunction with earlier versions of the drivers MAY cause severe performance problems (major slowdowns in the order of 30-50% while playing sound) in which case you should change the option back to the default "Software 3D Audio".

I have the latest drivers right off of creatives site...

I'll try going back to those drivers from compaq which is only a few months older than the drivers i am using now. If you look at the ina forums you'll see many people have this problem and it isnt just with audigy cards it seems to be with all sb live cards as well.

Lower physics detail!
I got a 10fps boost. The other settings, besides 16 bit color and dynamic lights didn't have any effect
Yes, my cpu is slow

yes, now that software is being designed for 32bit color, 16bit is totally unacceptable in the IQ department. check out the comparison shots in the UT2003 feedback thread. yuck!

With my lowly 500mhz cpu, I now can care less about IQ since the engine is still extremely cpu limited. I've got everything turned down to the lowest setting including triple buffering and the fps increase is still marginal. My settings looks like crap but don't care online when I'm fragging the crap outta everyone  I will try reverting back to software acceleration to see if it helps a 'lil more.

At the Omega driver site, I read that he turns off enhanced cpu instructions in opengl, in his drivers by default. I had often thought that perhaps disabling this may eliminate any confusion that the os or the game or even the cpu was in over the use of the mmx, sse, and 3dnow instructions. I am running a xp1800 and a gf3ti200 on a nforce mobo.
I have normaly had lateral lag when moving in games, and generaly poor performance.
Once I disabled the enhanced cpu instructions, everything smoothed right out. You might want to try this for a boost.
It may help some out.

Good tips, also I ran UT2K3 in OGL and my FPS dropped quite a bit. So in my case I will be sticking to DX for the game. Of course I can't live without my Aniso ;)

ok, ive got the craziest speed tip. im getting a constant 80fps in the indoor deathmatch level, and a constant 60 fps in the outdoor one. i saw this on the ina forums, ill give a link as well.
basically go to ur ut2003.ini in the system folder of ur UT2003 directory. press ctrl-F and search for 'mouselag' (without the speech marks). now edit the line which says 'reducemouselag=true' to say 'reducemouselag=false'.
this sounds stupid, and i didnt believe it, but it seriously does boost fps.
heres the thread on the ina forums :
http://www.ina-community.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=205743
btw, just read on that thread that the benchmark.exe uses a different .ini so u wont see fps boosts using the utility, unless i guess u modify that .ini, but i havnt tried that yet.

that mouse tweak does improve fps pretty much but totally nerfs the mouse movement. It's not noticable when there are no bots/players around but when u get close to someone ur aim goes extremely slow. I would rather take the 10fps performance hit than the messed up mouse movement..

yeh, thats the side effect. my accuracy still hasnt suffered too much, i.e i still own at this game :D . when im just wandering around with the mourselag thing off, i get some insane fps compared to before, on the indoor level im getting like 100 fp +. but the moment a bot/player appears things go down quite a lot, also in big battles things drop down to wat they were before. still nice to see 100fps in a game that looks soooo damn good.

im still pretty good at it too but its very annoying when you get in close and want to headshot someone with the LG or pull off a shock combo.
I dunno if you guys heard this yet...but if you go into your Unreal2003.ini and change Mouselag to FALSE you can get a nice boost in fps....some have gotten as high as a 30fps boost....
i hardly get below 30 now...schweet...and thats in a 8 bot instagib fest in Asbestos....
on the downside, if you have a NON optical mouse, your aiming might be a bit off...
