Of course, this could all be part of its master plan - Nvidia is planning to release a stand-alone sound board in the next few months.

Wouldn't be surprising. Even Nvidias CEO says "the graphics industry would no longer be the primary focus point of the company."

Nvidia will be going against the 800 lb gorilla in the form of Creative Labs.

More competition in that market would be nice since some contenders have effectively abandoned the market.

quote myself from other thread
Well I hope that they do make a soundcard, their soundcard if it does just what sound storm does will be better than anyting creative has to offer. This will be good b/c then you could buy a pentium system with soundstorm, and until they actually release a intel board then it is all smoke and mirrors.

But I also hope they keep it on the motherboard, because it is nice to have an empty case, with only a videocard air flow is better.

The problem is the soundstorm used the systems intergrated bandwith for some of its speed.. I dunno if a PCI device could do it as efficiently

I remember reading something about this in a different forum a while back. Someone said that they would be doing this, but not until PCI Express was released. So I guess it all sort of fits together - a PCI express based Nvidia sound card, mmm :).

I think ANY nVidia sound card could beat any offerings from Creative.....at LEAST in stability.

Cant be anymore bloated driver wise than creatives. I really hate creative labs..

I also hate creative because of their shotty drivers.

but since PCI express has so much bandwith, and NOT limited to graphics,

whats stopping htem from thowing soundstorm on a video card, you can enable or disable it, i bet it would be a big HIT for HTPC (home theater PC's)

What happened to NVIDIA SoundStorm?

Answer:
For motherboard partner product design and cost flexibility, we have elected to make NVIDIA SoundStorm technology available as an “add-on” chip at a later date. For now, you can find NVIDIA SoundStorm in several NVIDIA nForce2-based motherboards currently shipping.

So I'm guessing that means it's gonna be for mobos moreso than for a sound card.

Most probably add-in than stand alone? ....not particularly sure as nothing concrete has been said about the soundstorm solutions on this matter. But it would be cool if they released a full atand alone version etc?

According to SavagePaladin there are no plans for an add-in Soundstorm card.

This almost 100% definitely can't happen now.

Clarify. Now as in never, Or now as in Now? Nvidia could do it on PCI express. But they cant create a soundstorm thats as fast as the current soundstorm with current PCI limitations.

Now as in never, due a decision made by nVidia which will probably reveal itself shortly.

You must give us a better timeframe than shortly, like a month?

Okay... How does tomorrow sound? :D

well not made by nVidia itself per se... the hardware/driver team would love to continue to NF3, standalone, etc and beyond.....

I have an apology to make though... teh news should have hit the web yesterday but illness and offline life prevented me from doing final checks with peeps....

I have no doubt there'll be plenty of sites tomorrow afternoon/evening when you will find out what Hanners is getting at....

OK, so when you say "tomorrow", do you mean today, tomorrow, or yesterday?

I am not sure I get what you are talking about, the 9600xt I see no connections with soundstorm, max payne no connection, the open letter is the only thing connected and that is old news, I mean I saw it before when looking at NfHQ.

Sorry I must be clueless.

On a side note I thought that the letter was less than wonderful. I mean ABIT/ASUS/ others don't care if we buy Nforce or via chipset they just want to sell boards I think he should have emphasized that if any mobo maker has a SndStm product then everyone will flock to them and be willing to pay a premium. If every mobo co. had them then people would be willing to pay extra to get the functionality just as we do now...

I was hoping MzxPayne2 would be in stores today I wanted to pick it up on the way home ah well.
