Just a guess about the next two generations of GPUs / VPUs and their refreshes, from Nvidia and ATI.

early 2004 or spring 2004: R420 and NV40 (first VS/PS 3.0 hardware)

fall/late 2004: R420 refresh (R450?) and NV40 refresh (NV45?)

early 2005 / spring 2005: final variants of R4XX and NV4X

fall/late 2005: R500 and NV50

This keeps in line with what Nvidia and ATI have said about major new architechures being stretched out for much longer than a few years ago.

Does anyone think the timeline i basicly dreamed up is WAYYYYY off?

R500 is coming sooner, mayby fall 2004,
as it's the "original R400"

I would guess it would go more like this:

Early 2004 (read: March or earlier) - NV40/R420 debut
August 2004-refreshes of two chips
Early 2005-NV50/R500 high-end parts appear
Mid-2005-Mid- and low-end NV5x/R(V)5xx parts appear

The Baron is closest, but it'll end up slightly more stretched out than that.

Probably. What can I say, I'm an optimist and want my TBDR chips from NVIDIA and ATI already... *fist shake*

R500 and NV50 are TBDRs?

No.

But the stuff after it? Wouldn't surprise me at all.
