I found this in the readme file for the demo! DOH! :(

NVIDIA 40.41 drivers
------------------------

The NVIDIA 40.41 drivers are known to have visual flaws and performance
problems (hitching) with the Unreal Tournament 2003 Demo which are not
present in the 30.82 drivers. The issue has been addressed by NVIDIA
and future drivers released by NVIDIA will contain the appropriate fixes.

If you are currently running the 40.41 drivers please either downgrade
to 30.82 or install newer drivers when available.

they work fine for me...

Didn't see any hitches, just consistently low framerate.

It's a hardware limitation for me

Hitching? does this mean that the game will stutter every so often? if so, i don't have that.

yea, like drop framerate every few seconds, not in a constant way

I dont have it either

I was running the 40.41 and the game didnt run well at all.. thought it might be time for an upgrade.. saw the faq.. did as it stated.. Im running now 12X10 every thing on max and the game flys.... so Im glad that I listened for once.

i'm really perplexed, i get better fps score in the benchmark with 40.41, and i actually notice hitching with 30.82. i don't know i want to use 30.82 as they say its faster but it isn't for me.

30.82 just seemed faster.

are they talking about the hitching that occurs like at the beginning of a map? i do get that.

ah, so THAT's what my issues was!!!

I was kicking myself trying to find out what was up...just froze every so often for a sec at a time...piss me off!

And I was wondering why Linux ran it so much better :D

Thanks for the heads up. I was getting hiccups in the game and even on the menus and was wondering if it was something I had set up wrong. :P

I am gettting all kinds of freezes and reboots with this game, and I can only assume the Detonators are responsible. I'm serious, every kind of crash you can get, and at random times. I thought it might have been the slight overclocking I had applied to my CPU and GPU, but bringing the clocks down to the standard levels produced the same results.

Anyways, I guess there are really only 3 kinds of crashes. One is the classic reboot. Game instantly quits and system reboots. Then there's the freeze to a blank screen. Game crashes and presents a blank screen, forcing a reset. The other is the freeze frame. Game freezes and gameplay scenario is frozen in place, no blank screen, much like what happens when the GPU core clock is set too high, forcing a reset.

I think that's about it. The only other kind of crash I guess I'm not witnessing is a crash to the desktop, the one crash I would prefer over all others. I certainly hope these are strictly driver related, or at least related to the game and the way it runs with these drivers. Strange, at times I can play for hours at a time, and then sometimes I'll play for a mere 10 minutes or so and then, boom! We require your assistance nVIDIA :P

Same here, I was seeing texture anomalities and annoying pauses during gameplay too. off to install the 30.82's.....

the first time i loaded ut2k3 i had ALOT of textures anomalities, but i changed some settings either in ut2k3 or the 40.41 dets , and they work perfectly fine. i don't know what setting that was, all i know is that the 40.41 dets work perfectly smooth for me. i run ut wit in 800x600x32 wit max settins and no aa or af.

welp I'm running it now w/ the 30.82's and its running great no textures tearing or anything.

Gib said he just went to OGL with the 40s, and it's fine...

woh OGL? isn't d3d faster and better?

Can he post some scores with the 40.xx in D3d and Ogl?

Well, OpenGL doesn't have the initial pause when loading a level (that isn't much), and it does feel a little smoother on my machine.

That is, I can run at 800x600x32 with all details maxed and 2x FSAA and 8-degree aniso decently in OpenGL, but not so in Direct3D (this is with a GeForce4 Ti 4200).

On a personal note with the 40.41 drivers, I don't think I'm going to touch them again. They were primarily released for NV30 emulation support for developers, and really don't have much business in pretty much any gamer's machine...just too buggy. Fortunately, they do lend hope for the next version of the detonators...the vastly improved control panels will be great once they're fixed.

fear not, I hear by October Nvidia should have a second release of the Det4 driver series with lots of bug fixes :) I'm looking forward to those.

But to be honest, I really havent had any issues with 40.41 and UT2k3 Demo or build927. (me shrugs) I am running Opengl though, MS d3d is da devil. Oh glide how I miss you so

I tried installing the 40.41 and 30.82 drivers last night and repeated the process 3 times. I conclude:

The 40.41 drivers are slightly faster in UT2003 benchmarks (and for me, 5% faster in 3DMark2001se). However, the 30.82 drivers actually appear 'smoother' in UT2003 (and Operation Flashpoint, the only other game I tested.)

When I say 'smooth', I mean if I spin the camera with the mouse, even though the frame rate was between 40 and 110fps, the 'feel' and 'look' was definately smoother with the older drivers. That is why I installed and reinstalled them a few times to compare, and ended up keeping the 30.82s to play the game.

Both sets of drivers exhibited occasional pauses or slow downs for no particularly good reason (Eg. nothing special happening on screen, or complex area visible.)

hmmmm... interesting, maybe i'll try the 30.82 afterall. I don't give a damn about benchmarks if the game actually APPEARS smoother with a less fps. It's kind of like Voodoo2 Glide with UT1. Sure it would never go above 60fps even with the fastest CPU installed, but the game play was smoother than GF4TI4600 overclocked with opengl! Yes it was that good. (me misses Glide)
