Dose anyone know if the FX cards have "special" effects that others do not? I was playing Tron 2.0 on a Geforce 4 until recently when I got a 5600 FX to test out for someone.

With the FX, a lot of the graphics looked a hell of a lot better, like in the light cycle races, the floor wasn't just black, but it was transparent and there were things under it. Also a lot of the platforms were visible and things weren't just a single color, like the force fields.

I'm getting a 9800 XT and I was wondering if the Geforce 4 didn't have the effects because it's not DirectX 9, or maybe they made them "FX only"? If so, than that really sucks for people trying to enjoy the game on different cards.

The floor was see-through and whatnot on my GeForce 3, plus all the other goodies were enabled like the glow. You probably just had something set wrong.

There was a discussion about that a few weeks ago and I believe the answer is yes, there are effects which are FX only. Seems like an Nvidia scam to make it seem like their cards can do things that ATI's can't when it's quite obvious the situation is actually reveresed. I wouldn't be surprised if the effects were actually possible on your 4600ti.

The 4600ti could run that Wolfman demo at 60 fps but it can't do transparent floors?

it's not that it doesn't render it....it's that the it looks WAAAY better on the FX. I haven't seen it on other cards...when I get a chance, I'll take some screenshots of it on a Geforce 4 and then an FX.

short answer yes

anyways still buy the 9800xt you will like it better, although it dose cost 499,

however if you wanted to save money, id look at a 9800 pro 128mb and the price should drop to 300 or below.

Bull....

I have a Radeon 9700 Pro and get the same "FX-only" special effects on my card.

Don't buy into the bull....it may say optimized for Nvidia but you get all the same bells and whistles in Tron on a Radeon.

I have noticed nothing special...

unless there is something in the control panel that is FX specific...

fyi... I play tron 2.0 maxed everything @ 1600x1200 with all effects turned on...

really can't think of any other effects that can be turned... but I would like to know if there are any supposed special effects...

here's a level from Tron 2.0 with a Geforce FX 5600. Can anyone confirm it looks the same on ATI 9800? I know it doesn't on a Geforce 4!

aaaargh.. the jaggies

I can't see any difference... mine looks pretty much the same... cept I probably play @ 1600x1200 so the jaggies are not as pronounced...

the shot does look a little odd though... looks like one layer on top of another ?

meh.. I just played through that level... its the same :) transparencies look a little different on screen shot than in-game...

Baahh

From i have seen there is nothing special in Image quality of tron 2.0 in a Gf fx card...Of course is better from a Gf4
BUT
On the contrary with a latest Radeon the Colors seems more sharp from both of the above

colors/brightness can be adjusted... its ones personal choice... I play generally with no ambient light behind or above me therefore I turn down the settings a little to reduce strain on my eyes...

however like I said.. I have yet to see any differences in effects though I have heard rumours...

ok guys, I figured it out. If I turn AF on with my Geforce 4 with the 45.23 drivers a lot of effects don't render and some textures turn all white. Seems that was the problem, it renders the same on every card, faster on ATI if you read the new article at Anand. The differences I was seeing were being caused by a bug in AF not AA on my geforce 4 card.

So for everyone with a geforce 4, turn AF OFF when playing Tron 2.0 because the 45.23 drivers do not render the game correctly...thanks!

EDIT: ForceWare 52.16 fixes the AF bug and adds a nice gain. I just upgraded to an XT, so I'm enjoying the game at 4XAA and 16XAF and it flat out rocks! No problems...infact, it looks better :)

this discussion is pointless now since it looks better on my 9800XT.

so much for "the way it's meant to be played."
