View Full Version : Bad ghosting of ATI 9200 SE card above 1024x768 - normal for such a cheap card?
I got a 9200 SE card bundled with an ECS motherboard. I figured I'd use it on my internet rig. Except at 1280x1024, 32-bit and 85 mhz, there is terrible ghosting of black text on a white screen. Is this normal for such a cheap, cheesy card, or can I RMA it? I don't recall seeing something like this on an old Geforce2 card. It looks OK at 800x600 or maybe 1024x768.
I don't have this problem on a Geforce TI500/4600 or ATI 9700/9800 Pros, but maybe it's because they cost more?

that shouldnt happen.
Check all your connections and if you have any interference from electrical sources. Other than that RMA it
Yeah, I'm thinking the 9200 SE is actually one of the higher end ATI cards ECS sells, so it can't be that junk. I don't see this problem on a Radeon 7500. Maybe that's why these cards were bundled free with an ECS motherboard. I've contacted ECS U.S.A. but we'll see if they reply.

they won't
did you OC it?

Nope, brand new card. Heck, I installed Powerstrip and it doesn't even identify it's clock! I only ran halfway through 3DMark2001 and saw maybe 40-50 fps, so it runs 3D :D. It is DirectX 9.0 compatible and uses Hypervision.
Still, a burnt out card produces random pixels on the screen, not bad ghosting.
I'm gonna pursue an RMA. I can sell the card used here in Japan but it's not fair to the buyer. The card sells for around $65-70 retail here.
I tried running 1280x1024 on my Savage card at work. Think it has 16 MB ram. No ghosting, but very blurry. An ATI 9200 series should perform better than what I'm seeing.
I checked the specs on ATI's site, it has 400MHz Dual integrated DACs with 10-bit per channel palette, supposed to do 1280x1024 at 160 mhz. Doesn't mention the clock speed but c'mon, the card shouldn't be ghosting at just 1280x1024. Icon text is blurry too. It looks like an ATI card as it has red PCB.

Clevor:
Is this the kind of ghosting that you were seeing?

Yes, but I see it mainly on text, for example, when you open up My Computer and see your file names on the white background. There are gray shadows behind alphabets, really bad at just 1280x1024.
I suspect these cards are defective, that's why ECS was bundling them with some motherboards. Obviously, ECS did not reply to my e-mail.
I am taking the card back to the vendor here in Japan. They are pretty good about it; they will probably give me another card, or another brand if they don't have the ECS. If that fails, I am contacting ATI. I'm pretty sure it's an ATI card as it has red PCB and an ATI-like label. There is nothing about ECS on the card.

Well then it certainly seems like the same problem that me and a lot of other people are having over at the Rage3d boards.
I had it on a 9600 Pro that I returned, got it on the replacement card as well and currently have it on a 9200 that I got as a loaner from the store.
Here´s the thread:

ghosting ? are you useing LCD screen ?
TRY THIS your refresh might be at 60hz
To make sure you have that 85hz or higher refresh go to Display Propertys / Advanced/ ATI Displays / now click your monitor and select maximum refresh rate to highest that should allow you monitors max refresh not locked 60hz.

could it be your monitor? mine dose the same thing and somehow i killed my monitor.
i tried it on diffrent comps and the exact same thing happend so i did determine it was my monitor, do you have a diffrent comp to test it on?
Hey Spook, thanks for the link. Will check it out.
No, I'm running 85 mhz refresh rate, besides, I've run 9800/9700 Pros, Ti 500s, Radeon 7000s on this same monitor and I never hand the problem, unless I ran 1600x1200 or something. Even then it was minor unless you opened up a document in Word and looked at large text.

This is totally unacceptable for a modern day video card. I took the card back to the store but they told me I have to exchange both the motherboard and card as a bundle. Don't want to do that as the motherboard is fine (it rocks actually). I am gonna have to bug ECS and ATI on this one.
I put my trusty ole G400 Max in my internet rig. Best 2D card there ever was.
