What are those? I'm a newb to this stuff. I have seen other numbers like nv 38, etc. So what does it all mean?

This are codenames for the graphical chips (GPUs)

NV40 - next generation part from NVIDIA

R420 - next generation part from ATI

Simple no? :)

Edit: Those are code names for the chips. NV40 and R420 won't be what the cards are called in retail.

For example - GeForce3 = NV20, GeForce4 Ti = NV25, Radeon 9700 = R300, Radeon 9800 = R350.
