View Full Version : XGI Volari??? Where are the benchmarks
So where are all these Volari Benchmarks we are supposed to be seeing?? Is this another Bitboy card? Anyone have timing??? I am going to do a whole new system upgrade in the near future and would like some good competition to the ATI cards out there (5200 & 5600 is not competition!!)
Thanks!!

The forthcoming NVidia FX5700 series is supposed to give the 9600XT a run for its money in the mainstream segment.
"It will be interesting to see which firm – Nvidia or ATI - will win the mid range market, the FX5700 or Radeon 9600XT as both cards should deliver similar performance for $199."

I'd wait for benchmarks before making a move. Also, the Radeon 9800 NP supply is drying up, but the prices are still good. ($240 at Best Buy) I'm also curious to see what the Volari chips can do.

Volari cards have not been launched yet- have some patience.
Hence my question.... When might we see an actual launch instead of just rumored 3dmark scores???
I want to wait it out, but I'm getting the itch.. My 1.4 amd and 8500 LE isn't cutting it anymore.

Relax the Volaris cards are not out in market yet
it will take some time to see benchmarks with them

If I don't see Volaris and DeltaChromes being benchmarked by the end of october, I might get resentful, and I'm sure neither XGI nor S3Graphics would want that.
:D
Some Volari benchmarks and comments here : http://www.tt-hardware.com/news.php?sid=5053
Translation of the french article linked above...
"We could see turning famous Volari of XGI. Our opinion on these GPU is
enough mitigé. We could note that they functioned but also that they
had difficultés in DirectX 9 and some "problèmes of qualité". Of
course, the drivers utilisés étaient très young and they would
strongly owe améliorer. We will espérons of course that XGI will
évitera to fall into through cheat à all goes. The performances in
3Dmark03 seem good first of all, but when one looks there moreover
près, one can see a lack of performances in Mother Nature and très
good performances in Battle of Proxycon which compensate. We however
could notice that the qualité in the two tests of class DirectX 8
did not était perfect."...
"XGI clearly indicated us to want to fight against NVIDIA and ATI on
the top-of-the-range one. Is this really realistic? If on the
mainstream and the entry of range it is always possible to be a small
place, it is very easy to break the teeth on the top-of-the-range one.
We have serious doubts as for the capacities of XGI to being able to
compete with ATI and NVIDIA in the niche which is the top-of-the-range
one. Who more is, their solution Bi-GPU is likely to be expensive and
offers only one very average support of the FSAA... At all events, the
young team of XGI is resolutely optimistic. Let us wish them good luck
and hope that Volari answer waitings."...
... I think those scores are kinda old though... it'd be nice if one of the companies followed up on all this stuff in the next couple weeks, though

Another translation of the first paragraph without odd characters ;)
"We were able to see to turn the fine Volari of XGI. Our opinion on these GPU is rather ambivalent. We were able to note that they worked but also as they had difficulties in DirectX 9 and some "quality problems". Well heard, the used drives were very young and they strongly should improve. We hope well heard that XGI will avoid falling in the breadths of the cheat to all avenue. The performances in 3Dmark03 seem good premium approach, but when one there looks at of more near, one can see a lack of performances in Mother Nature and of very good performances in Battle of Proxycon that compensate. We nevertheless were able to notice that the quality in the two class tests DirectX 8 did not be perfect. "
Thanks... :) sorry about the crap characters on mine...

So basically, with the current Volari drivers, performance is a mixed bag with good scores in 3DMark03 but mixed performance in games, with low scores in some and higher scores in others. They also promised not to cheat.
Frankly, anything at all that injects competition into the videocard market is good. If Volari does get their drivers in shape and produces something that is just as fast ot only slightly slower than an R3xx or an NV3x for a decent price, I think both NVIDIA and ATi will be shaken up.

Volari will lose to ATI in HL2 but probably beat NV. They will probably demolish everyone, though, in Doom 3 (with the exception of Series 5. I AM the TBDR Pirate, you know.).
16x2 has to be good for SOMETHING. :)

Is THAT what their pipeline specs are? 16x2? What are their fill rates?
Linkage?

Wow. The Volari core will own everything if they get it right. I especially like the idea of SSAA.

Ouch.
/me learns the search function.
You always talk about performance but you forgot about stability of the drivers
I would hate having a card that in every game Crashes etc
Performance does not play a role when stability SUCKzzz

Hopefully Volari comes through and is successful with their product.
As somebody else said the additon of another video card company
will increase competition and just plain give us more choices.
I wonder though how Volari will feed a 16 pipeline graphics
chip. That's some fast RAM that will be needed if they want the
pipelines to actually be useful.

I thought Club3D would have their Volari GPU's availible at the end of Oktober.
