Well, I picked up a built by ATi 9600 Pro yesterday, and I've been having fun putting it through its paces. I picked up Splinter Cell and it's running smoothly in 10x7. I've also been testing it with War3, AoM, Vice City and Freedom Force at various resolutions and AA/AF levels.

It's a huge improvement over my 8500, but I'm worried something's wrong with SmartGART or the mobo drivers or maybe the settings of the card itself. My best 3DMark2001 score with the old card was 8000 which isn't unreasonable for a 250/250 clocked LE. My score with the new card was only 8900.

I'm considering formatting my drive and starting over with a fresh Windows install, but if anyone has other suggestions or ideas I'd appreciate them.

specs:
Athlon 1800+ XP
MSI KT3 Ultra mobo
512 MB PC2700 RAM
Maxtor 40GB ATA133 & Maxtor 20GB ATA100
Lite-on 5024 burner & Afreey 10X DVD
Enermax 350W PSU
SB Live Value
Windows 89 SE

run 3DMark03. 3DMark01 is based almost entirely on FSB speed.

You prolly have some setting turned on. Use rage3d tweak and select the option for 3dmark01 and then do the test.

2905 in 3DMark03. Don't know if that's good, bad or average though.

Guess I'll install Rage3d Tweak and see how much overclocking room I have.

Seems low. I was getting 3309 with the system in my sig.

Run DriverCleaner? Reinstalled DX9.whatever?

After overclocking to 450/330, the score improved to 3182. I haven't seen any artifacts yet, but I don't really want to push it much further. I'm a bit worried about the heat in my case.

D'you think DriverCleaner or a DX reinstall would be worthwhile? I don't know how much the rest of the system affects 3DMark, but I do have a slower CPU, less RAM, and a less powerful PSU than your system.

YES.
