View Full Version : Now is a good time to buy a FX 5800?
I know, they're scarce...
But with the best 5600U's sittin around $200, if a 5800 could be found for $190-$220, it wouldn't be such a bad deal, would it??
I'm sure you could call an FX5800 at that price@ ultra speeds a "good performer"... or a "decent card for the money"...

I would avoid it, If for no other reason than the 128bit memory pipeline.
I didnt mind the leaf blower as much as some. It only activates when the 3d pipeline's are activated. by then your speakers should be louder than the
Superchar errr leaf blower:firedevil

If your wanting an Nvidia card, I would go for the 5900 non-ultra for a good price. or consider going ATI. I am a NV fan and own a FX5900(Waiting on Det 50's  ) But ATI seems like a real good choice right now:firedevil
5800 reg.'s don't have leaf blowers...
Put an XFX 5600U rev. 2 @ 199+ tax next to a 5800 @ 210... which one is more appealing?
I'm not thinking ATI. I'm thinking nvidia. I have my reasons. :)

Can they be found that cheap though? Looking at pricewatch the answer is no. In fact, a 128MB gfFX5900 is cheaper than the gfFX5800.

Ahh I was thinking Ultra srry, Yeah the 5800 for 210, I see your point.
ATI is good stuff but I understand. I to have stuck with NVIDIA:firedevil

Where can they be found for $210? Unless pricewatch doesn't list the lowest prices anymore
newegg had a few, but they went quick... it was 2 different brands, one an abit, the other an MSI I think... I could be wrong though...
There was like 10 5800's for sale on ebay a couple weeks ago for around this price, and they went quick too...
There's bound to be a couple more to surface...
And I know that 5900's are coming down in price as well, but I'd really like a little bit of time with an nv30... just a little... ;)

PNY 5600Ultra rev. 2, CompUSA $169. I picked one up it's a very good card, it's quiet, runs cooler than a 5800, overclocks extremely well and comes with a full version of Splinter Cell. The NV31's memory controller is more effecient than the NV30 as well.
I have an XFX 5600U @ 450/850 right now... and other cards... but like I said, I wanna play with 5800 for a while... so I suppose I'm one of the very few who want anything to do with this card, though I'm sure if there were more around, the 5800 would be goin like hotcakes @ decent prices right about now...

That's cool, if you're just looking to play around. I have an ATI card as my second card myself. Either way, I think the 5600Ultra for the money is very good. I have mine at 456/878. I did try 570/878 but after about an hour the GPU froze up. My memory can hit 900mhz but I like to keep it under the max just so I don't F the card up. Much better than my old GF4 when it comes to AA and AF.
You like your 5600Ultra?

It's never a good time to buy one of those.
I beg to differ, ATI_Luvr9700, I mean, 5150 Joker (I knew you'd come in here and dish me some flak :p)...
A 5800 sits snugly and squarely in the middle of 5600U and 5900... IMO...
:p
The turbine fans on the 5800 non-ultra (even without the leaf blower) are still noisy as hell compared to the fans on the 5900 non-ultra (like the MSI one). I couldn't stand the whistling noise the ASUS 5800 non-ultra made when in 2D mode (i.e. just using windows) and sold it.
I bought one of the last 5800 non-ultras around here since it was good value. It is significantly faster than the latest 5600ultra (when multi texturing). It should overclock well, mine gets to near ultra speeds running continous tests for 12hours. The cooling fan is silent until it hits ~80degC, then it is quite loud. With room temps of 25deg, it normally runs at 40-60degC, but at near ultra speeds it gets to 90degC (card fails at ~100degC, damage at ~140degC, but has thermal protection). I would only recommend this card to people who (like myself) want it instead of the 5600 which performs a bit disapointing. I upgraded from a Geforce3 and this is significantly faster. There are some 5900 non ultras approaching these prices, and some other alternatives to consider.

I don't think the 5600Ultra is disappointing. The only thing it runs slower than a GF4 on my rig without AA or AF is 3Dmark2001. Every other game or bench it's faster with or without AA or AF turned on. Even at 456/878 the highest temp. my GPU runs at is 46c. It is slower than a 5800 but i'm also not turning my box into a furnace either.
At this point if you want an Nvidia card and want something that's not going to break the bank and is faster go for a 5900 non ultra.
yeh, the 5600U does run cool even when OC'ed, I've noticed that over the last couple days... MUCH cooler than the backside of an NV20 or R200...

Yeah it does run cool, thanks to the flip chip. Right now in 2D mode as i'm posting this it's at 37c. That's with my case temp at 26c. I'm really happy with the card and with the 52.13 dets it performs well. Better than with the 45.23 dets. If I paid $299-$399 for the card I would be whistling a different tune, lol.
