Buy a Linksys router like the BEFSR41. Simplest way to share your connection and you get a fairly decent built in firewall (which is a must for broadband).

I agree and the Linksys BEFSR41 is what I use and never had a problem.
And if you're going to buy your own cable modem, may I recommend a Motorola? I've been quite happy with the SB4200 and a D-Link DI614+ wireless router...
Cheers,

I have a D-Link DI-704P and it's wonderful. Built in firewall and all. :)
But I still use Zonealarm as a second firewall. I hate hackers. ;)

Motorola Surfboard modem and the mentioned Linksys router. You'd be all set with that.

I just bought the D-Link DI-604 router and I love it. Plug it it and go. Plus it's only $30. Not too shabby. :)
