Actually NV36 is a 2x NV31, and the NV38 is a bumped up NV35.
Think about it. No way NVIDIA would intentionally cripple GPUS when they're behind the performance curve. It's not good business sense. They're coming out with cheaper and higher-performing devices, not crippling high-end chips to refresh middle-road market space.
