I've been working on this one for a while.

The symptom is this:

A blank white screen is fine.

A blank white screen with text generates a line
the height of the text which extends the horizontal length of the screen. It comes out lighter than the text (for black, it's a gray smear).

I'm apparently not the only one with this problem, judging by http://www.nocrash.com/ncbbs/msgs/157.shtml and other research on the web, but I haven't found a solution.

I get this effect in every screen mode, including the BIOS setup screen.

How can I resolve this?

Do you think it's your display RAM's problems?

All I can think of is bad graphics memory, "ghosting" another image on top of the first image.

Well, I kinda posted because I have no idea what the problem is.

Two questions:
1) Is there any way to narrow it down to that?
I'd expect that if it were a VRAM problem, it wouldn't be as deterministic
as it is. There aren't any transient effects or signs of anything that
would lead me to that determination.
2) Is there any course of action other than getting a new card?
