Yeah, kinda silly when you consider that a Mac would have updated all the shortcuts automatically.

Nephilim I don't own a Mac. I have a PC and I don't expect any program to scramble an entire directory without a little more warning. As stated in that thread its more a cultural thing in that I want my files to stay where I place them. Location may not be a concern on a macintosh but it is a concern on a PC that may have other programs useing the files. The shortcuts were not a major concern since I have a program that creates them from a m3u playlist which saves a lot of time ofcourse itunes only exports txt or xml.
I like itunes but its only there to sync my iPod I would be just as pissed if Media player or Winamp did this. When in Rome

Apple does nice coding but they treat you like AOL in other words like their users are completly incompintant and we need to do everything for them.

Wow, that's quite a statement there. I don't think I like it one bit.

Have you ever actually, you know, done anything with a Mac? At all?

Just a little update for people who are interested. My friend says he tried renaming the file extension and the plugin still doesn't work. Maybe in the future someone will have a plugin that can defeat whatever Apple did to the files, but for now I don't think you can play iTune m4p's in Winamp.

Ahh well...I had my fingers crossed.

What portable players if any play ogg files? I find they sound much nicer.

Well I answered my own question, I had searched awhile ago and I could not find any info, but it seems that just within this month things have changed for the better.

and one other that seems pretty flaky to me.

Unfortunately for me, they are all HD based I would rather have flash memory that is only 512mb, then a 20GB HD that might break while I run or crash my bike :).

Very true about the iTunes/iPod thing, Sat - but I ain't going to be installing iTunes any time soon. From what I've heard, it searches your hard drives for all your audio media and copies and MOVES it into its own directory structure - and it messes with your metadata! I'd like to use iTunes, but I'm not doing that until those "features" are gone.
I think it only moves it if it's on the same partition. I keep all my music on my D drive, and iTunes resides on the C drive. It copied the files (lame, I know), but didn't delete them from their original locations. At the moment I'm pretty much just using it for the music store -- I don't like what it does to the playlists on my iPod (it alphabetizes them). Still good, though.

Cheers,
JND

All you have to do is uncheck the option that says "Keep iTunes folder organised" The latest version, 4.111, allows you to set this right after a new install.

It was going to happen sooner or later: (http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2002/12/09/tech/main532369.shtml)

Last Friday, a new security-cracking program called QTFairUse was posted — along with the message "So sue me" — on a Web site for which Johansen is listed as the registrant, or owner.

The new program circumvents iTunes' anti-copying program, MPEG-4 Advanced Audio Coding, by legally opening and playing a protected music file in QuickTime, but then, essentially, draining the unprotected music data into a new and parallel file.

Jon Lech Johansen is the same guy that wrote DeCSS. I'd imagine the we'll be seeing programs that will un-DRM and transform an AAC file into an .mp3 within a few weeks or so. Now that I can get fair use out of the files that I get from iTunes, I'll definitely be purchasing music from Apple's music store.

I don't use Kazaa or any other filesharing system. I just want to be able to use these files as I see fit.

i-tunes is a step in the right direction, for sure. I don't mind paying the artists for their work- especially @ $.99/ track. Good selection of music at the i-store, too- as well as some artists websites are offering tracks for sale using the software (Pearl Jam, U2 ?, etc..etc..). The AAC file format is a problem, but not if you're just casually using these tracks in your PC jukebox, or portable. Certainly only a matter of time before these can be converted.
Good software- could they really have done any better given the restrictions the RIAA must be putting on them?
