View Full Version : iTunes for Windows
The Apple.com (http://www.apple.com) web site reads "Hell froze over." I guess that's apt (even though the Cubs didn't make the World Series) ... they released application software for the Windows (2000/XP) platform! For iPod owners with PCs, head on over and grab iTunes (http://www.apple.com/itunes).
Cheers,

At least that's a heck of a lot better than using Musicrap Jukebox or whatever they included with the Windows iPods. I might actually consider getting one now...oh wait, I have my $30 Mp3 Discman instead. :D
I'm pretty sure you can still use it even without an iPod ... it's a media player, CD ripper, CD burner and "browser" for their iTunes Music Store. I'm pretty sure you can download MP3s and burn 'em to CD (as MP3s). Or just leave 'em on your hard drive. Or transfer 'em to your iRiver. Or whatever.
Cheers,

I installed it yesterday. It is now my default player.
I'm loving it. Playlist creation and management is a dream, and you can burn audio CD directly from iTunes (no need for seperate burning software). It basically does everything the iTunes for Mac does. You can even connect to the Apple Music Store if you want.

Seems to perform identically to the iTunes on my PowerBook. With my 600+ CD collection on my Winbox, with iTunes now I really want an iPod.
Is this thing free? It weighs like 20 megs...

Most likly its free. Is't iTunes required to purchase music? Thats where Apple will earn the Bling Bling. Theve just massivly increased the number of peeps that they can sell music to so Apple profits should go up nicely this quarter.
Edit:
First impresions well aside from a few snafus after installing the progies fairly intuative. The Smart Playlist function Rocks if you have lots of files:afro2: Sync speed seems to be improved compared to MUSICMATCH especially when volumn leveling is used. Overall as impressed with iTunes as much as I was impressed with the iPod. They work great togather..hmmm wonder why... much easier to quickly lauch program and sync a few songs.
Hav't tried to buy music yet but will check that out later. Now if the RIAA would get off Apples ass about selling individule songs......... "The Albumn is work of art as a whole and should't be sold individual tracks! What if someone cut up the Mona Lisa and sold the pieces. "B.S.

iTunes is completely free. It's the music store part that costs money (average is less than a buck a song).

Music files are a special m4p format that apparently can only be played with iTunes.

Is that the streamong preiviews or the files you bought? I thought the two formats were mp3 or acc. If it true than screw it
edit. quote the helpfile
"Purchased songs are encoded using MPEG-4 Advanced Audio Coding (AAC) format, a high-quality format that rivals CD quality. You can listen to AAC files in iTunes and on your Apple iPod (with iPod software 1.3 or later). You can also create your own audio CD containing songs you've purchased so you can listen to them on a consumer CD player. You can only burn 10 copies of the same playlist to an audio CD when it contains purchased music." SheeeeeEEEEEEtt ok I have no reason to purchase music can go to a swap meet and buy a cd for $5-8 and do whatever the hell I want with it . While it is more liberal with what you can do with the music than other online places it still ticks me off that they limit it. I want an mp3 with NO damn resrictions on use. Its the ONLY way anyone will get me to buy online as oposed to used CD's. Ecpecially since most new releases are crappy IMO most of the stuff I listen to is from the 70,80,90's.

Full files for Windows are m4p. Full files for Mac are aac.
I thought that the previews were in the same format(but I'm not sure).

And, of course, the only portable player that can play M4P's is the iPod. iPod is a great product, but it's just plain overpriced when compared to good competition like the Creative Labs Zen NX. Hell may have frozen over in Cupertino, CA, but not in my neck of the woods.

I have *always* wanted a hard drive mp3 player. But Ipods have always cost too much, and the other solutions were too big. I just recently got a 30gb Nomad Zen NX and love it. The audio quality is outstanding. Would I get an ipod if money was no object? Maybe. But since it is, I'll hang onto my extra 200 bucks.

I hope someone will create a portable DVD-R/RW player. Not for viewing movies, but for listening to DVD's full of burned MP3's or OGG's or FLAC's. I like the iPod and Zen, but accidentally dropping a DVD is a lot easier on the budget than accidentally dropping a hard drive.
Thought someone might be interested in this. (http://www.pmbrowser.info/hublog/archives/000316.html) It's an input plugin for Winamp that will play aac/m4a files. It'll also do .m4p files, if you change the extension to .mp4 or .m4a
I'm still looking for an .m4a/.m4p -> .mp3 converter. If anyone's got a link, please post it!

Does that work with iTunes? My friend tried it and it didn't work. Although I don't think he renamed the file extension.

I don't know yet - my broadband was supposed to be up and running yesterday, but it wasn't (way to go, SBC). I'll check it out as soon as I can get access to the iTunes Music Shop - ideally, I want to be able to download tunes from them and either convert them to .mp3 or somehow remove their little protection thingies. I'm all for higher quality formats, but I don't like the idea of having their fingers in my hard drive.

Kind of a side comment, but I have to say it anyway. The point of this release was to encourage more sales of the iPod, and I think this is something we all realize. But I think a smarter move would have been for Apple to release iTunes and then drop the price of the iPod by $100. They might take a hit initially, but if people buy a Pod then head on over to the music shop, Apple likely could recoup the loss.
Now back to your regularly scheduled discussion. :D
Very true about the iTunes/iPod thing, Sat - but I ain't going to be installing iTunes any time soon. From what I've heard, it searches your hard drives for all your audio media and copies and MOVES it into its own directory structure - and it messes with your metadata! I'd like to use iTunes, but I'm not doing that until those "features" are gone.

I've heard that, too. Screw that. I've even ditched QuickTime in favor of the independently developed "QuickTime Alternative." Plays all QT formats with an interface like that of Windows Media Player 6.4. It works fantastically and is a much smaller download (5 mb vs. 11 for QT 6.4).

Uh, guys, that feature is easily turned off. Geez. It doesn't do that unless you TELL it to.
Actually, someone mentioned that where I was poking around yesterday (don't remember where), and said that it still did it even after he unchecked the box.
But then, that's probably a case of "sliding mouse click" syndrome - if you click on a checkbox and then slide the mouse off before releasing, the checkbox won't register the click.
I probably jumped the gun... but I still have to wait for my broadband to get put in. :(

It seems there are several bugs to work out still. I know I unchecked the option Oh well. Whatever you do don't drag folders into iTunes it seems to always refile them according to this thread http://discussions.info.apple.com/WebX?28@244.yezeaiV8iLQ.6@.599acfc2
My personal favorite idiot quote
:bs:"If you are going to use iTunes as your juke box, there is really no need to worry about how it is organizing your files.
Granted I am a Mac user, but ever since I've been using iTunes, I pay absolutely no attention to its filing scheme. Everything is so nicely organized in iTunes. I understand the initial shock, but believe me it really doesn't matter. Of course this assumes you are going to stick with iTunes, which I think you should. Remember iTunes is meant to be more then just a player. It is your front end for keeping all your music organized. What you are trying to do is already being done by iTunes. Let it do the work.":bs::angel2:
Sorry but that fckd about 1400 shortcuts in my GTA VC mp3 directory. Not to mention Musicmatch,Winamp,Media Player,Sonique and a few other programs that used those DAMN files. Sorry ignorance like that annoys me.
I have my mp3's reorganized and it only took 4 hours yaaah I love Tag & Rename. Would have been less but I had to deleate all the excess folders and sub folders created by iTunes and recover my cd pictures/reviews.

Just a little update for people who are interested. My friend says he tried renaming the file extension and the plugin still doesn't work. Maybe in the future someone will have a plugin that can defeat whatever Apple did to the files, but for now I don't think you can play iTune m4p's in Winamp.
