i remember i had a broken hand and there was a big ut match for my clan and i need to play haha so i used a joystick and a mouse.
a joystick instead of the standard wsad to move, and the mouse to aim. it worked pretty damn good except i only had one finger for use so i could only use the trigger on the joystick so i used that as jump.

a-left d-right s-back right mouse button-forward left mouse-primary shoot, then use my other three mouse buttons for action, zoom reload and space for jump.

inverted mouse, typical WSAD config, space to jump, left ctrl to crouch (use my pinky).

Arrows for movement..
Inverted Mouse..
Jump on mousewheel down
Feign Death on Mousewheel up.

And a whole lotta voice taunt/location binds all around the arrow keys.

Thats primarily for UT.

if you don't use WASD, and use the arrow keys, you are at a MAJOR disadvantage, having 13 less keys around your fingers. Stretching will take precious ms away from your gaming. having more keys around your fingers is better than fewer. the arrow keys are the worst choice you could make, since there are fewer keys around them then any of the others.

Uhh Wanna Frag? Seriously it depends on the Keyboard. Iv'e been using the Arrrow Keys since Wolf3D, Also iv'e tried the WASD style but i cant take not having the move Fordward and Move Backward buttons Not aligned.

On my Keyboard the Delete, End and PD key are directly above, and the 3 more above that, Then i have the NumberPad set as all my weapons.

But the truth is whatever you get used to you like. We all find our own best ways.

My roommate plays on the arrow keys, and frankly, he's at the disadvantage. With the onslaught of games using more and more keys to do different things, he's out of keys. In CS he doesn't have a voice chat button near his walking fingers. he cna't pull up the scores either without moving his hand off the keys. I have 32 EASILY accessible keys to my left hand while fragging. this includes between 8 and 13 with my thumb alone (depending what games we talk about and the frequency of them being needed), leaving my 4 other fingers to maneuver my character. How many can your thumb hit on the arrow keys? 3 or 4? it's a matter of efficiency. In FPS games, especially the faster ones (SOF, DOOM, UT, quakeX), ms make the difference.

If you dont' like not having the up/down keys aligned, TURN THE KEYBOARD. then they're straight up. that's what I do.

Who needs to pull up scores during a ladder match?

Im not concerned about my scores. Im concerned about whether or not Im doing my job for my team.

In UT you dont need a million keys. I have my numpad and my page up/down keys binded with locations and thats all I need.

Jump is on my mouse, feign death (for flag dropping) is on my mouse and thats it.

I play instagib, so I dont need a bazillion keys.. Not to mention, when I do wasd there are way too many keys that Im accidentally pressing instead of the right ones.

I guess if you only play 1 game, you don't need to standardize keys among various gametypes. The scorecard in CS shows how many enemies are left on the other team. Have too many keys is better than having too few. Some of the keys I bind for maximum efficiency are: Best safe weapon, best unsafe weapon, next item, previous item, use item, new weapon, previous weapon, last weapon used, weapon special 1, weapon special 2 (SOF), lean left, lean right, feign death, voice commands, voice chat. not to mention that I have 7 buttons available on my mouse as well. It's all about having exactly what you need when you want it, instead of moving your hands off the keys to get what you want.

I've actually been contemplating moving to a TFGH arrangement so that more keys are available to me at one time. but there is an error which occurs while crouching, so i'll have to work on that.

And by having the WASD keys non-vertical, your thumb is already naturally placed on the spacebar, giving it the ability to move to the next 2 rows quite easily for more options while still using your WASD fingers to move around the map.

Howzit one and all,

Well it's quite simple...

A - strafe left
D - strafe right
Right mouse button - move forwards
S - move backwards
W - rocket launcher
R - Railgun
Left mouse button - fire
space bar - jump
Left shift - zoom
mouse wheel/alt - change weapons
C - crouch

Other than that button usage might change a little from game to game.

For FPS games, I use an EDSF combination as my hands rest more naturally on the space bar that way. For third person games, I move over to WASD because I have a tendency to use the shift key more often in those games. It's weird I know but it's what I've always done. :)

I'm addicted to the arrow keys... :p

I use left/right keys to strafe left and right...up/down for forward and back....

Control or space jumps and the number pad controls weapons...

The mouse fires, zooms, scrolls through weapons, etc...

So far, this has worked for me.....I always hit the wrong keys when using the WASD bit...

:D

um, how is turning the keyboard going to align the W and S keys?

Arrow buttons = Strafe Left, Right. Move Forward Backward
Delete = Peak Left
End = Open doors/Use (get in and out of car GTA3)
PageDown = Peak Right
Home = Drops gun
Insert = Show Scores
not using page up at the moment
Enter = Opens Limbo Menu in Wolf
Shift = Un-mutes mic for RW
Ctrl = Jump
0 = Crouch
Key 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 Are all Weapons
NumLock, /, *, - = Voice Comands

Mouse

Left Button = Fire
Right Button = Secondary Fire for most / Sprint in RTCW (and Giants)
Middle Mouse = Scrolls weapons and Zoom for Scope, Press on to reload
I also have two more buttons on the side, one says "I NEED AMMO lol", the other is Walk.

What i really prefere about the Arrows Layout is that the other keys are surrounding your fingers, instead of all being bunched up with the wasd layout. But like i said before, we all like what we get used to.

WSAD is so 90s, I use the WSQE config, more natural...

I can't see why people like wasd. I much prefer esdf. Just leave your left hand on the home row at all times. That way it's much quicker when you want to type insults while fragging. :)

I also play with mouse look inverted. Up is down and down is up baby!

Here's what I use for FPS games. MMORPGs are a different story...

A = Strafe Left
S = Strafe Right
D = Jump
F = Reverse
G = Forward
Q = Lean left
W = Lean right
E = Duck
R = Reload
Space = Alt. Fire
Lt. Mouse = Pri. Fire
Rt. Mouse = Forward
Scroll up/down = Change weapon
Inverted Mouse = On
Mouse Look = On

I'm considering changing the right mouse to alt fire, and switching F and G around. Undecided on that still

Here's what I use for FPS games.

S = Strafe Left
F = Strafe Right
A = Jump
D = Duck

Right Mouse =Fire

Left Mouse = Forward
Middle Mouse = Backwards

Space= Change weapon (just this key)
Mouse Look = On

#=weapons

This is fixed. It's what I use for Q3. Other key atributions vary according to each FPS game

I use the keypad for FPS games.
8=forward
5=backpedal
4=strafe left
6=strafe right
0/Ins=jump
./del=crouch
+=reload
Enter=activate item
left mouse=fire
right mouse=alt fire or sometimes next weapon
mouse wheel=weapon select

Usually bind other closeby keys to various tasks (i.e. zoom, change views, etc.)

WASD/ESDF/QWES ... bah :)

My generic setup:

Left mouse - primary fire
Right mouse - forward

"Home keys" for pinky to thumb
D - crouch/down
T - strafe left
Y - back
U - strafe right
SPACE - jump (thumb sitting on right corner to "sync" hand position)

Secondary keys
Pinky:
S - slow/whatever
F - flashlight/fov/whatever
E - whatever

Ring finger
R - reload/whatever

Middle finger
H - handedness (was usefull for Q2 if you wanted to hide behind a corner:))

Index finger:
I - use
J/K - inventory up/down, but I usually have it on mousewheel

Thumb:
AltGr - secondary fire (AltGr = key to the right of space)
N/M/,/. - taunts

And then of course 0-9 for wheapons (and it's quite easy to reach since my home keys are at the top row, close to the interesting high numbers).

I know I've used KP_PLUS and KP_ENTER for right hand thumb in some games.

I had btw a rather nice thumbwheel function in Q2 (last game I cared to put some effort in key-script writing). Pressing F set FOV to 90, and put the mousewheel into "zoom mode" (zooming back and forth FOV 15-120). Pressing J put the mousewheel in "inventory mode", going back and forth in the inventory. It was rather easy to make such "mousewheel modes" where you could scroll through any kind of settings.

WASD--movement. Yeah, it owns ESQF because shift is RIGHT THERE, and that's handy.

Space is jump.

Left click is fire/primary fire, right click is secondary fire/whatever I need it to be.

Mousewheel is Random Stuff (I think I have it set to zoom in right now in T2, it's a godsend)

Crouch is left control, usually.

Other things I desperately need (e.g., push and pull for JK2) are Q and E.

Yeah, the Baron has it right. :)

Left hand = movement
Right hand = aiming & firing.

that's how it should be. I'm sure mixing them up would create weird interference and hesitations between the right and left side of your brains :D
