View Full Version : ET HALO review
What a crappy initial comment on that HALO review from ET: http://www.click-smilie.de/sammlung0903/sauer/angry-smiley-003.gif
"Maybe it happened two years later than it should have, but Halo finally landed on the PC — and boy is it a hardware hog. For a port taken from a console system with a 733MHz CPU, 64 megs of shared RAM, and a graphics chip somewhere between a GeForce 3 and 4, Halo sure does run slowly at times, even on the strongest PC."
For a port taken from a console system... Well of course it won't run well on a PC with similar spec. The resolution is considerably higher than the console counterpart, and they have redone the pixel shaders and dynamic lighting... Also- a lot of HALO on the X-BOX version was pre-rendered (e.g the sky, grass and water on most levels). Now, however, these are rendered in real time, and are fully animated.

From the above quote I think you misinterpreted what he said. He did not say Halo runs crappy on similar hardware on the pc but runs crappy on hardware much more capable(stronger) than the X-Box specs. My system is more than 3x the X-Box specs and it still runs like crapp compared to the X-Box version....that shouldnt be for a game first intended for the pc and released over 2 years ago.

Seconded.
I still haven't heard ONE report of Halo running well on a pc....not one!
Now either everyone sucks at building/tweaking 'puters or else the Halo port sucks major ass....which would you bet on?
NOT running good on a PC?
come on, folks... have the "fluidness standard" increased THAT much?
Here, dig, take this in, and remember it:
XP1700/256mb PC133/GF2ti:
Runs FINE @ 8x6, medium texture and control panel IQ...
XP2400STOCK/GF3ti500/512mb PC2100:
Runs FINE @ 8x6, all HIGH IQ, no AA/AF...
XP2400 @ 184fsb, 2.1ghz/Radeon8500@ a paltry 270/410/ 256mb PC2700:
Runs FINE @ 10x7, all HIGH IQ, no AA/AF... Halo likes ATI's PS1.4 path :)
XP2400 @ 184fsb, 2.1ghz/FX5600U @ a 450/850/ 256mb PC2700:
Runs just like the 8500, except with PS 2.0...
XP2400 @ STOCK/FX5900 @ 425/750/512mb PC2100:
Runs just like the 5600 @ 10x7, but can afford some AF... 4X is cool, 8x makes it a little less fluid than I like it... I suppose a 256mb NV35 might do a little better there...
...sorry, but I think it runs pretty good on awide variety of systems...

Enable AA on any of those set-ups and tell me it runs fine.
I need AA anymore, what's the point in having a good rig if you can't use AA?
You's SPOILED, dig... :p
I haven't enabled AA (or used the command line fix or whatever)... and I don't need it.
Yes, I'm growing accustomed to using it with the 5600U and 5900, but the lack of using AA in Halo really hasn't affected my opinion of the game.... bottom line: it's fun, and IMO runs good on a variety of systems...
I see where you're coming from on the AA thing, though... wouldn't this game look sweet with 4XS?? ...yep, it would...
... and I suppose it WILL on a 512mb NV45 on a 3.4ghz A64...
///sidenote, but related///... heck, HOW long did it take DeusEx to become playable to the majority of the community?? :p///end sidenote///

No arguments from me there, life has been kind as hell to me. :)

I played Halo through at 4xAA 8xAF 1024x768@32bit on Bubbles with me 9700 Pro in her and it wasn't too bad, but it did get choppy in parts and just didn't have the fluidity I've come to expect. :(

--violent shiver--
Oh man, I still had my 32Mb Rage Fury (non-Pro) as my "good" card when that game came out and I STILL re-install it on every viddy card upgrade just for giggles to see how well it'll run! (It took 1 year from when I got the game 'til when I could actually play it decently, and I had to build Bubbles to do that. )
Point taken, but I'll still argue that for the amount of time it took they sure did a crap job on the port. :(
heh, I tried DeusEx on a Celly566 a few months back, 1st with a V2, then with a GF2MX200...
...
NOPE!!
I was like, "wtf, UT runs fine, w00t's with this??? Me's confoundizzled!!"
And for the sake of staying positive re: halo, I think "damn, this engine is HEAVY DUTY!! ...and it adds quite a few features to the already long list on the console version!! ..." ... IMO this is one of the games that's helping push the industry forward...
Nothing against them, but UT2k3 and Unreal2 didn't do this like some thought it would... Fo sheezy, it runs awesome @ 10x7, meduim textures, almost everything enabled on a GF2ti!!
