same issue but with amd
wtf?
now i have change from RPM install to .tar installation. but it still wont work.
i can successfully install the NVIDIA_GLX-1.0-3123 from make install
but i cannot install from NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-3123 using make install. i get an error msg.
when i use setup to check my X configuration, it only detect TNT2 but not Geforce2 MX and i cannot get to change it. why? anyone know how to change?
I was haveing the same problem, tried the rpms, then the tar file but I wasn't being able to load the NVdriver module ,then i got the kernel updates from redhat (2.4.18-10) then did the rpms and edited my XF86config-4 file, then everything worked. but dvd playback is still laggy as hell , anyone know any tweaks that could help?
my system:
p-3 1000 mhz
256m RAM
Asus Geforce 2 gts deluxe- 32 meg ddr
Asus CUSL2 motherboard (815chipset)
RedHat 7.3
SB live soundcard
using ogle for dvd playback at 1024x768
i would think i should be able to watch dvd's a little smoother, or is the dvd support in ,linux that bad?
any info much appreciated
I meant to ask this in last post but forgot:
are you certain that the kernel module is loading? check with /sbin/lsmod
if not try loading manually with modprobe, if it gives you an error than those kernel updates should fix it.
Try to enable DMA on the DVD, it is disabled by default in RedHat
You were right, dma was turned off on my cd rom, i enabled it with hdparm, and the dvd playback has improved dramaticly, it's actually watchable now :) very much apreciated!
thanks

sorry i am still having the problem configuring my Linux 7.3 running on Geforce 2 MX..
i have update my kernel to 2.4.18-10 (kernel-2.4.18-10.i686)
and use NVIDIA (NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-3123.rh73up_2.4.18_10.i686) and NVIDIA (NVIDIA_GLX-1.0-3123.i386) file..
but it still cannot detect my AGP card y?
can you kindly show me how u configure ur "XF86config-4" file?
maybe somethg might have gone wrong there..
thanks..
The process for configuring XF86Config-4 is documented in nVidia's README file...
If you can't understand what they've written, post your config file here and I'll see what I can find.
Also, you might as well post /var/log/XFree86.0.log while you're at it.
i have try the step in the README Nvidia provided.. but still cannot startx..
this is wat i get from the "XFree86.0.log" file.. i put it under the attachment..
How about posting your config file? It appears you're attempting to load like 3 million drivers, and the first one (some ATI something) is complaining that your card isn't an ATI card -- well duh it isn't -- and X is bailing because of that.
there will be 3 file i post here:
1) is the XFree86 configure file
2) is the output i get when i try to run the command XFree86 -configure
3) this is wat i get when i try to startx
hope this file helps...
thanks..
OK. It seems that the original XFree86.0.log file that you posted was posted right after you ran XFree86 -configure, right? That would explain why it was trying to load a ton of different drivers -- because that's what XFree86 -configure does, load a bunch of drivers and then attempt to use whichever ones work. The problem is that the "nvidia" driver isn't included with X, so it doesn't know to try it. And the "nv" driver (the default, open source one) doesn't work with GeForce4 cards.
So, re-edit your XF86Config file (actually, as long as it's in the state that it was in when you posted it here last, that should work -- but check it to make sure nothing has changed), run startx, let it fail, and then post your /var/log/XFree86.0.log file. That should give a better idea of what's going on.
thanks bwkaz.. now i know wat is the problem but a very wired problem..
it say:
(II) Primary Device is: PCI 01:00:0
(--) Assigning device section with no busID to primary device
(EE) No devices detected.
Fatal server error:
no screens found
and it end.. y?
p/s:
i have change from RH7.3 to RH8.0 but i still cant get it working.. sif sif :'(
What does cat /proc/pci tell you?
It looks like your nVidia card (at bus 1, device 0, function 0 on the PCI bus) isn't recognized by anything -- and its PCI device ID is screwy; 0x002b? I'm not positive that that device even exists... it's sure not listed in the nVidia README as supported. At any rate, recent kernels' list of PCI IDs doesn't have it listed either. Which card was this, now? Is there a possibility it might not be working properly (like does it work in other OSes)?
Also from the readme, not sure if it's applicable or not, but:
Please note that the RIVA 128/128ZX chips are supported by the open
source 'nv' driver for XFree86, but not by the NVIDIA Accelerated Linux
Driver Set.
in the start up it load it as nvidia geforce 2 mx i mean in the bios..
then i have test it in the windows 2000 and XP it works fine also..
but not in linux.. my fr have test in my system wif others AGP card it work.. like TNT2 and Geforce2 MX400.. it works..
but not mine Geforce2 MX100/200..
why???
this is wat i get from "scanpci -v"
OK, scanpci thinks its device ID is 002b as well. But according to the nVidia README, under "Supported Devices",
NVIDIA CHIP NAME DEVICE PCI ID
...
o GeForce2 MX 100/200 0x0111
...It looks to me like either your card isn't a GeForce2 MX 100/200, or it's reporting its device ID incorrectly.
Unless anyone else has any ideas? Is this a known issue?

What's your vbios version? Can you contact your card vendor to see if there's an update available?
