View Full Version : Modding my old EVGA GeForce 8800 GT video card's fan to blow heat from the PC case?

Hello.

I have an old EVGA GeForce 8800 GT video card's fan in a brand new Antec Sonata Proto mid tower ATX case with two case 120mm case fans, MSI P43 NEO3-F (MSI-7514) motherboard, etc. See http://zimage.com/~ant/antfarm/about/computers.txt for the details for this secondary computer. Also, hardwares were cleaned last night from its dust pileups after about two years of usage.

I noticed this video card's fan goes to maximum speed (4,000 RPM) even when my computer is idling. I think its air flow is not good in this new case. I know my old MSI ATI Radeon 4870 video card (512 MB) blows its hot air in the rear, but this NVIDIA card doesn't. Is there a way to mod its cooler to blow out heat?

I don't think there's much you can do unless you want to get an aftermarket cooler, go liquid cooling, or get a couple of exhaust fans.

Sheesh, the weather has been crazy in 100F degrees and makes my room about 90F degrees! For an example, with that PC. Even its Antec case plastic feels hot on its top:

Post your temps in Celsius lol. I'm not used to Fahrenheit when it comes to PC temps.

What are you using to monitor those temps and fan speeds?

Wow. Your temps are pretty high... My CPU idling temp for Core #0 is 29C with a slight overclock and aftermarket cooling. My GPU temp 47C idle. How many intake and exhaust fans do you have? That could be the issue, maybe even dust or constricted airways. If you have fans blowing and sucking in every which direction, you'll create a turbulence inside the PC. So, ineffectively, the cooling will not really be cooling anything at all. Have you tried rearranging any wiring, fans, or dusting?

Edit: I'm using Everest to monitor my temps.

Edit: I'm using Everest to monitor my temps.I will have to take a picture if I can. See my secondary (Linux) box's details shown in http://zimage.com/~ant/antfarm/about/computers.txt ... It's not crowded inside to me. Fans are all blowing, but I am wondering if my case fans are not blowing hard enough. I can feel some warm/hot air blowing out in the rear vents. Dusts? My hardwares were cleaned out about seven months ago when the issue started with a new case (read my original post).

FYI, so far. No crashes or weird behaviors/symptoms from the extreme 100+F/37.777...C degree heat wave (almost 90+F/32.2222222...C degrees in my upstair room from a few weeks ago.

I took a look at what your set up is in that link. Scythe is an alright company. I used to use the Scythe Samurai. I wasn't too happy with it, so I upgraded to the Xigmatek S-1283. Anyways, I digress. Are your case fans intake or exhaust? Can they be upgraded to 120mm fans? I recommend having a one-for-one fan setup; Have one intake fan for every exhaust fan. I have 3 intake fans and 3 exhaust fans on my case. All are 120mm and I don't see temps anywhere near yours. My room can get up to 80F, even with the window and fan on. My back fan and two top fans are exhausts, then my front, bottom, and side panel fans are intakes.

Also, if your expansion slot covers are removed, it's messing with your air flow. You want to make sure you have positive air pressure in your case. This link from Silverstone will help you to understand. Now that I look at it, I'm thinking about re-configuring my fans.

Bah, that's not lame. You gotta make the air go with the flow lol. Make sure your rear expansion slot covers are on and your front bay covers are on. If that's where you have your fan, then you should be fine since there's a mesh filter at the front. I highly suggest to change your thermal paste if you haven't done so in 5 years lol.

If that's where you have your fan, then you should be fine since there's a mesh filter at the front. I highly suggest to change your thermal paste if you haven't done so in 5 years lol.So, thermal paste on the video card? Hmm. Is that hard to do? Remember, my computer is not having any problems (no crashes). It's just hot as you can see.

BTW, interesting air pressure. That is hard to manage in a hot room. Haha.

That could contribute to high temps in your case, especially if your ambient air temp is hot. I would recommend reapplying thermal paste on the video card and CPU. It's not too hard. There are a lot of tutorials on youtube. I'm not sure if Arctic Silver 5 is still the go-to paste, but that's what I've always used. Keep in mind that the paste will break down after so many years that you'll have to replace it. You should see your temperature drop on your parts after like 100 hours of break-in of normal PC use.

No OCing. I don't like that stuff. I want stability. Ah OK. I will try thermal paste on the old video card later on.

BTW, when I say loud I meant the high pitch sound. Not the loud spinning (I'm OK with that).

Lol YouTube is full of helpful how-to videos, my friend. Just make sure when working with electricity/electronics, you secure your power. So, unplug your power cord, turn your PSU off if it has a switch, and dive right in :). Make sure you ground yourself. If you don't have a grounding mat or wrist strap, you can just touch a metal part of the case every now and then to discharge any static build up in your body. If you would like to advance your computer knowledge, stick around nvnews, ask questions, post answers, and if you want, buy yourself a CompTIA A+ Essentials book. It's like the Bible of computers. I've had mine since 10th grade and I still reference to it.

The CompTIA book won't help you with DIY things. Grab MaximumPC magazines for DIY stuff. You'll learn things hella fast with those two pieces of literature.
