View Full Version : GeForceFX 5950 Ultra Overclocking

I have the eVGA GeForceFX 5950 Ultra. Decided to use the 'auto-detect' feature to see how high this beast would go. It set itself to 647/1.12Ghz! Very impressive but I figured there was no way it ran stable, well fired up the second CoD Demo, ran perfectly stable but noticed a very small amount of texture artifacting. Clocked the ram down a couple of mhz back to 1.10Ghz, once again ran perfectly stable but this time with no artifacting. GPU temp maxed out at 43C after several minutes of gaming but I'm going to run a looping demo later to get a *true* max reading. Think I lucked up on a good o'c er. Also I listened for the gpu fan to spin up when it entered 3D mode, you could barely tell. I'm not sure what NVidia did to quiet down this newest vers of the CoolFX but whatever it was, it has sure paid off because it works.

Just wanted to pass along some of my personal experiences before someone tries to completely write off their latest highend offering cause coupled with w/ the Det 50's, things are getting much brighter

Nice man. Mind posting some bench's of the default speeds vs the memory at 1.1ghz?

Things are a little brighter for nVidia than a month or so ago. DX9 performance is 'acceptable' now and IQ is better. They also have a great mainstream with the 5700's. The performance crown is with no doubt still in ATI's hands though, let's hope nVidia can get back into the form in which they used to operate. At least they are making visible steps now.

All IQ comparisons show that both ATI and nVidia cards are more or less equal. I see people questioning the credability of these writeups on IQ, but come on, you cant blame everything on bias.

647 Core??
Are u sure that's not 547 core??

Congrats on the new card. :D

Maybe the new coolers are going to rock.

Yes you read that right, I was as shocked as you were, trust me :D

I tried clocking mine to 650 (which was what the auto detect recommended) but using rivatuners diagnostics tool I can see that it downclocks to 300 (or is it 350) MHz prety much just after launching any 3d app

well you have to remember the 5900/5950 both have two different core clock speed settings one for 2d and the other for 3d. By default the 2d clock speed is 300Mhz while the 3d clock speed is bumped up to 475Mhz, the memory speed remains the same through both modes.

hehe yeah and when you overclock too far it will revert to 2d mode even when in 3d which is what I pointed out happened on my board when I tried to use the settings that auto detect chose for me

My NV30 would drop back if I oced it to high to.

The more I keep hearing about the 5950 the more I want one. :)

If the cores can run 550+ I know I want one. :D "lol"

But I'll be happy if I can find a 5900U for trade and
some boot. ;)

That clock is amazeing! Is it confirmed that the nv38 is made at IBM? If so, i have a feeling that anything that ibm shoots out of their fishkill fab is going to run pritty dang fast.

My overclock is 560/1.0GHZ
Auto-detect chose 598/1.10GHZ but wasn't stable.

TSMC is doing the NV38's.

IBM's doing the 5700's.

Man I wish IBM was doing the 38's. They would be even better OCers. ;)

Hey are we still saying JuiceZ hit 647mhz?

That seems pretty unlikely. They are clocked at 475 core right? That would mean a 172mhz overclock.

It just seems pretty unrealistic. If they would hit that high then Nvidia would have core clocked them to at least 500 or 550 default. 475 would have been a way to conservative number in a tight battle like they are in.

No doubt that you will be happy with a 550/1100 clocked Nv35 ,it will be a Sweet card . :D

but 647/110???????? WTF
if the performance is 15%-%20% greater .. then i would consider myself to get one of those :D but $500 still a lot of money for a video card ,im still waiting first to see what Nvidia have to offer with the Nv40 :)

647MHz core ? Probably one in a thousand.

Sry for the confusion guys, I was able to run a few games at that setting but most d3d titles reverted back to a lower clock like AnteP mentioned. On a side note she currently runs @ 591/1.05Ghz. It'll run @ 600/1.1ghz but texture anomalities begin to occur. Still a sweet o'c if you ask me though ;) go eVGA! heh.

That is a nice overclock |JuiceZ|!

The 5900U I have will go 552/965. Above that and I start getting artifacts and sparkles. I run it at 515/950 to keep the temp in check with stock cooler.

Hey my reference board runs at 600/1.02 just fine. I found with lots of testing though that 570 got me the best results in benchmarks.
