View Full Version : Finally broke down
and ordered an AIW Radeon 9700 (refurb). I know I'm taking a chance, but the price was right. I had previously decided against purchasing another AIW but changed my mind at the last second (just can't stand to be without all those cool features). If I don't like this card, I will return it for something else (maybe a retail AIW 9600 Pro?).

32MB AIW Radeon 7200. This should be one heck of an upgrade.
ChrisW all you have is 32MB AIW Radeon 7200 and you talk so bad about Nv's IQ and performance.:nutkick: :rofl
But besides that I would have gotten the xt....its retail, HL2 and going from a 7200 I doubt you would have missed anything. BTW my buddy has that same card.

I don't talk bad about their IQ and performance. I talk bad about their tricks they use to deceive people into believing their IQ and performance is better than their competitions. I would personally like to own either card (if it was free). It's IQ and performance are obviously much better than my current card.
Which XT are you talking about? The 9600XT? I could have purchased a new 9600XT for the same price but I thought the 9700 would have much better performance (plus I get a TV tuner!). The 9800XT would cost so much more it would be insane (~$550  ).
Haha it would be like going from a TNT2 to a Radeon 9700!!!

Sadly no. It's just the bare board. Fortunately, it uses the same cables as my old card. The only thing I will be missing is the Remote Wonder and the Pinnicle software cd. I can always use my copy of Ulead Video Studio if I ever find a use for it.

Yeah, I really wanted the remote. I'm still hoping I will luck up and they will send me everything with the card but I'm not expecting it. I can always order the Remote Wonder II when it finally comes out.
Well, I wasn't expecting it, but it came in today. First of all, when they say all you get is the board...that's true. No cables, remote, or software as expected. I ordered an AIW Radeon 9700 (non-pro) and they sent me the more expensive Pro version. It looks like a really nice board but unfortunately it does not work correctly. :(

Here is a screenshot after booting up into safe mode:

I can get it to boot to Windows, but when I try to change resolutions, the VPU Recover box opens up and tries to report an error to ATI.
Well, this sucks. I seriously doubt Newegg actually RMAed the card to ATI as there is no way they could miss this.

sorry about that dude i really am. refurbished dosent mean what it usto. send it back, buy brand new card heh.
Good news. I got it to work! It simply needed some extra lift. I propped a screw driver against the right corner of the card to lift that corner slightly and the card works. I'll run it through a series of tests for the next few days before I decide to keep it. Maybe there is really nothing wrong with refurbished cards from Newegg?
Well there is nothing wrong with most everything from newegg, and if there is they make it right. In my experience anyway. Still I would not like my card to be propped up with a screw driver, sounds like something is whacked out.
ChrisW - please give us a full review on this card, I too am very interested to hear about your refurbished card experience from NewEgg. I always figured there was nothing wrong with them, but I'd value your feedback on it.
Also, for future reference I'd recommend you purchase a seperate TV Tuner PCI Card next time. Reason being is I use to buy AIW/Vivo cards exclusively, but then I realized I was selling myself short... for the same amount of money I spent on the AIW/Vivo cards I could have gotten a faster & better card. I can't see much difference between my Hauppauge capture vs Nvidia capture, in fact my Hauppauge is easier to use! So case point, I'm gonna keep the Happauge forever but my current GF4TI will be the last AIW/Vivo enabled video card I'll ever own. Next time, I'm opting for the faster choice. Just some food for thought, although I admit you got an awesome deal on that card!.
PS - please tell me you won't need to keep a screwdriver permanently pried in the slotcover?

Awesome, I'm glad you got that baby going, She looks beautiful ;) Newegg sent me my Leadtek Geforce FX 5900LX card, And it has worked wonderfully since I got it. I will definately buy from newegg again. I am amazed at the quality of service they provide as an online realitor

All I know is my next upgrade is going to blow my mind. GF2 MX 400's make the baby jesus cry... A friend may outdo me, tho. He's riding on a GF4 MX 440 and planning on saying "**** it" at the end of the year and maxing out an Alienware. I'm much more of a "price/performance" shopper, and doubt I'd even stretch near $300 for a card purchase.

Yeah, I was going to go that route, but the AIW was only $10 more than a refurbished 9700 so I thought I would go for it. The way I look at it is I got a 9700 Pro with an extra tv tuner attached for free.
From what I can tell, there is absolutely nothing wrong with the card itself. I think it is just not making good contact with all the pins in the AGP slot at the default angle. Maybe I just need to adjust the position of the motherboard? Anyway, I can't prove the problem is not with the motherboard or the AGP slot itself so I can't say anything bad about the card.
This is a great board for the money. I bought it specifically for using 6xFSAA and 16x anisotropic filtering. Even though I am severly CPU limited (CeleronT 1.3GHz), I get FSAA and aniso for free as the card has nothing else to do while waiting for instructions. 1600x1200 is beautiful. I've tried most of the ATI demos and the Dawn demo (LOL) and everything seems fine. I do get some strange artifacts in the Final Fantast benchmark! Is this normal? Everything else I've tried seems fine.
EDIT: Nevermind. I didn't realise I was using a RadLink to run FFXI and it was seriously underclocked (for my last card). FFXI works fine now. :)

How are you downloading the FF11 benchmark? I have had nothing but trouble when trying to download it :| Keeps telling me I dont have cookies enabled when I do.
I am glad you are happy with the card, 9700 Pro cards are stellar, Even in there age they just literally murder whatever is thrown at them
