BALL MOUSE!

There is an "Optical Index" listed on the specifications page so that means it could very well be an optical mouse. 2100 dpi is almost 3x more than a Logitech MX500.

"optical" & "5 programmable buttons" and I might just give it a try. :) (Although I'm still looking at that leather intellimouse.. )

If it is indeed optical, I might have to pick one up. I wish another retailer other than Worst Buy would stock it. :(

Tried one yesterday...compared to an MX-700....well, lets just say there IS no comparison. MS is not even close with the Intellimouse when comparing to the MX series.
Ball mouse? Ridiculous. Optical is the clear leader now. My sweet 8-button Logitech MX500 is proof of that.

Bestbuy.com has the pre-order available and according to that it has a big No next to optical technology.
I think I'm going to send an e-mail to BFG once and for all to find out.

How so? I've never tried the MX-700, I've just been a hopelessly addicted optical explorer man for the last few years. (5-button, optical, corded)
I thought their new leather one was the same thing, but in leather! (Yeah, I'm kind of stuck on the idea of a leather covered mouse...kind of like me leather covered stick shift. I just like the idea from a comfort perspective. :) )
I remember reading that the new boomslang was going to be a ball mouse too, but that was a few months ago. I'll try and hunt down the link.

The logitech rodents hammer microsoft in everything, most noticabley microsofts rodents seem fond of irraticly jumping to another part of the screen for no apperent reason
The MX series has a funky button layout, I like how the intelli mouse has a button that is huge on each side, plus yer regeular buttons, that is how a mouse should be.
I would buy one of these guys if they had optical support as well I don't want a ball ever again.

Or burning out your USB hub for no obvious reason. I'm going out tonight and buying an MX500. I left my computer on all night for a Folding@Home run. When I woke up this morning, my USB hub was off and my keyboard and mouse didn't work. I had to hit the power button as I couldn't tell if my system had hardlocked or not. When I rebooted, my keyboard was fine but the mouse wouldn't detect.
To make sure it wasn't a system problem, I ran Prime95 for over an hour and it was fine so I suspect the mouse had something to do with these problems. Bye bye M$. Hello (again) Logitech.
I had the MX700, but I miss my cords. I just can't game the same on a wireless than I can with a cord.

Having gone back to an Intellimouse Optical (which will be going away after today) I think I'm in the same boat as you with regard to button layout. The Logitech MX310 sports this button layout, and it's $20 cheaper than an MX500.
By the way, I e-mailed BFG's marketing department to get a final answer on the new Boomslang and to hopefully get a review unit for Envy News. I'm also looking to get a tour of their facility since they're based in Chicago. I'll let you all know if/when I hear something.
Thanks for the info, btw my mouse is starting to behave eratically so maybe it is dying too. My friend had an intellimouse hooked up to his GametheaterXP (USB hub) and it quit working I wonder .... but we should not start a rumor like that :) t'would be irresponsible. I'll look into the mx310.
I wanted to get a blue tooth split keyboard, but as of yet I have not seen one only regular ones, I cannot handle regular keyboards now either always hit the wrong keys.
edit: the mx310 has tiny buttons tho, maybe some store here will have one so I can try it b4 I have to buy it I don't want to get a crappy one.

Well, I'm in. The head of BFG's marketing department e-mailed me and said I'm welcome to come by, take a tour and write a story. He also said we'd see about review samples of the Boomslang. From his initial description, it sounds like BFG is a crazy but fun place to be.
Now I just have to find some time in my schedule to get up to the plant. :D
you get to go down there!! thats ****ing awesome! make sure to talk about your findings

My BFG factory tour is scheduled for Dec. 2. I also have a Boomslang review sample headed my way. The PR guy has been great to work with. Stay tuned to Envy News for the product review and subsequent look at the company. :)

I tried the boomslang... it is a ball mouse and it is real heavy. If you get sweat on the ball, it slips on the rollers. The optical index is the encoders the ball turns.
It is a big piece of donkey dung with a bunch of marketing smoke & mirrors.
A cheap logitech USB wheel mouse is much better because it's optical and lightweight and it is more controllable and the ball won't slip.
Go to this page http://www.bfgtech.com/sniper.html and click on "Sniper Boomslang2100 FAQs" and you can see it is a ball mouse.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q: Why does this product still have a roller ball and cord? Isn’t that old technology?
A: Mice may be mechanical (containing a ball and mechanical sensors), optomechanical (containing a ball and optical sensors), or optical (using a laser to detect movement). Sniper Boomslang 2100 is an optomechanical mouse, so it combines a roller ball with advanced optical sensors.
They make it sound so attractive "optomechanical".
The design of the Sniper Boomslang 2100 has a refinement to standard encoder technology -- an optical-quality index with tiny prisms molded in to focus the light, greatly reducing light diffraction, increasing speed and precision, and delivering up over two times the dpi of a normal mouse.
More techno-babble.
Regarding cordless vs. corded: Cordless mice can still exhibit refresh rate lag that a gamer can notice. A corded mouse virtually eliminates this issue, so for gamers we believe this is currently the best choice.
More the same.
Q: Will there ever be an optical version of this mouse?
A: As stated above, Sniper Boomslang 2100 is an optomechanical, or semi-optical mouse, so it combines a roller ball with advanced optical sensors. When the pure optical technology is right, that will be the logical next step. For now, we feel that a mouse specifically designed for gamers with no lag is the best choice.
So they are saying it is an old ball mouse basically. Kind of like M$ trying to push off Windows ME as new technology.

Why are you judging a product before it's even out?

It is the same one they sold before... I owned one and it was a p.o.s.

If you think this mouse is heavy, then I would strongly suggest you go to your local sporting goods store, pick up a five-pound weight and work out with that thing 24/7 for a week.
