Hey all,

recently purchased a GeForce FX5900 non-ultra as part of an upgrade, more than happy with it except for one thing, the artrocias whining sound it gives when it gets hot... eg only when the room temp gets to 22-24C and above this happens, and yes i did expect there to be fan sound but not to this extent.... sounds like a dustbuster!
looking at getting a cooler fan or something like that, how do other people overcome this

How do people overcome it ? Simple , By not buying Dustbuster :p

Eh better disregard my post don't wanna start :flame: war :tongue2:

I don't have this ...card , but what driver did you used , newer detonators suppose to lower fan speed , sound should be lowered also i think ?

I went to http://www.sparkle.com.tw to look for your card, and I couldn't find it. Do you have a pic of the card? Or maybe the link from the place you purchased it from? If you have one of those large double-slot fans on your card (like the FX5800) then that may be why it's so loud. But the 5900 non-ultra should not require the the double-slot configuration, at NewEgg.com they have several FX5900 non-ultra cards and they're all single-slot design.

Must be the particular manufacturer FX you bought. The MSI FX5900 (ultra or non-ultra) is virtually silent.

Must be the brand, or case placement, etc.

My BFG 5900 is no louder than the powersupply and case fans. I was pleasantly surprised.

My PNY 5900 non ultra is very quiet. Then again I have a Delta on my XP. :D.

Seriously, I've put my head close to the fan on my 5900 and it's fine. Could be what some of the other people have said, maybe it's just the brand you got.

My Leadtek 5900 is quiet as a tomb... Tho it has a huge frikken piece of metal attached to it.

From the pic I would not think it would be that loud.

I've not liked the extra long PCBS since the g4ti series-I wouldn't buy a nvidia card just because of that (even though my clients want them ;))

let alone the sound.

I was so annoyed with the whining of my reference fan that I risked a Zalman ZM80C. Works great with a fan at low RPMs, but with no fan at all i saw momentary peak temps of 160C!

hmmm... it's not a 5800-style HSF, so I guess it's just loud because it's loud. :( doh!

I can say from using both cards at home that neither the FX 5900U or FX 5950U REFERENCE design fans are loud at all.. I too was positively surprised after all the talk about the Hoover FX cards of the past. 3RD party manufacturers want to use "cool" and flashy fans that are crappy and noisy. If you want optimum performance get a card with the reference design fan and heatsinks. The FX 5950 fan looks much more badass than it is, and sadly many people will assume its as loud as it looks.

Could be that you simply have an unluckily noisy fan, but then, I've installed quite a few Sparkle cards in my time, and they don't exactly use the best of the best, if you know what I mean, in component terms.

yeah this noise 'only' happens when the room temp gets above about 24 25degrees, warmer weather , the fan is spinning to its max to keep the ambient temp down maybe? when the room temp is lower like 19degrees i have had the card at 50-60degrees playing games and its reasonably quiet.... i dont get it:rolleyes:

I have BFG 5900 (oc to 500/990) and it isnt much louder than it was at stock speeds, which wasnt much louder than my psu. Its a double slot with 2 or 3 fans.

Mine's easily the loudest component in my system... PNY FX5900. Double slotted also. I bought it back in August. I think it's probably got the 5800 cooler on it.
