WinXP displays even *.jpg images as wallpapers. Strangely I am unable to set a jpg image as one. When I try to,, I get the error message of 'rundll32 causing an error in mshtml.dll file'. I have no idea what it means.
I even tried restoring my system to an earlier state, still the problem remains.
Win98 used to have a utility to extract original files from the cab files to replace any altered ones. Is it possible to do this in WinXP Pro? If yes, how should I go about doing it?
that's a problem with some system files, you could try replacing those files from CD, or use my work around...
1) open Internet Explorer in a window, not maximized
2) drag and drop the JPG file you want into the Internet Explorer window
3) when the image appears, right click it in the window and left click Set as Background
That will copy the JPG to a BMP file so maybe it'll work better. Don't worry it won't save over the old file name, it just creates a file in windows called "Internet Explorer Wallpaper.bmp"

I am attaching the error message that appears. Maybe this will explain my problem better.
I can always convert jpg files to bmp and use them as wallpaper. But the issue is why am I unable to set jpg files as wallpaper if the facility is there?

One certain cure: fdisk. ;)
Seriously though, you might want to try and make sure your machine is completely up to date. Run it through windowsupdate and see if that helps. I've seen that fix some strange problems before so you never know...

Maybe you can update something in your XP, like SP1 or any IE6 update; it may help somehow (fix some corrupt dll?).
Don't you know exactly when this started?
