View Full Version : what did and didn't work with windows 8.1 pro rtm

10-18-13, 04:24 AM
I installed my update of windows 8.1 yesterday, twice. Basically I found out that my antivirus(avast free 2014 edition) uses hardware virtualization. I turned it back on my cpu after installing win 8.1 pro the 1st time. It screwed my files and apps. When I installed a second time, it took 2 and 1/2 hours to download 3.5gb mid afternoon (my connection is 25mbit and it took 10-20 mins the 1st time at 7am). Slow because everyone else did the same and must have been pushing microsoft's servers yesterday. Anyhow, this is what worked and didn't work once I got my OS installled:

Didn't work:
-Zone Alarm free antivirus and firewall (they don't have a win 8.1 compatible version out yet)
-Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit (also formerly known as exploit shield, won't turn on it's shield in 8.1)
-Realplayer (stops installing half way through, did this with windows 8 until they released a new version)
-emco malware destroyer (won't scan, says it needs admin right, ran as admin, still didn't scan)

Did work:
-Asus AI suite 2 for windows 8.1
-Asus GPU tweak
-Nvidia 331.40 beta drivers (wddm 1.3,sli works too,2x gtx 760's)

BTW, you may notice when you install win 8.1, that your network system tray icon has a x in it. If you go to network and sharing center, it will say you have internet access. And yes, you will have internet access. It's a win 8.1 bug.
