View Full Version : amd 1.4 & 5900 fx ?
I currently have an amd thunderbird 1.4, 512 mb memory and have just purchased a 17 tft monitor so now need to play all of my games at 1280 x 1024.
I have a geforce pro 2 at the moment and it is far too slow to play existing games at this resolution such as c&c generals and ut2003.
Would an fx 5900 be a good choice or is my processor too slow.
Or would i be better buying something like a 5600u ?
cheers

You can find the FX5900 for slightly less than $200 in some places so that would be the best choice right now. If your LCD has DVI input, be sure to use it when you purchase your new card. That way you can run games at the display's non-native resolution and the interpolation won't be nearly as bad. My LCD's native resolution is 1280 also, but I can play Halo at 1024x768 and the blurring is minimal at worst.
You also might want to think about upgrading your processor. Games like UT2003 are more dependent on your CPU. If your motherboard supports them, you can get a Barton 2500+ for about $90.
FX5900NU is a great card for only $200, but your CPU is definetly lacking. I have a solution for you that would run around the same cost:
get a Barton 2500 for around $85, and a R9600Pro for around $130. If your motherboard doesn't support Barton or 333fsb CPU's, even an AthlonXP 2400 would be a huge improvement over your current cpu and it's around the same price as Barton2500 too ;)
that should solve all your performance woes

What is your motherboard?because you can get a lot fastter CPU real cheap. and then a FX5900 would shine.
