And I still think it is a bad idea, but we all know all internet traffic already runs through Area 51, which is why Tong wants it destroyed.
Geez where all the peeps who like turning things over to the UN now? :bleh:

The idea is to stop spam and limit some of the wild west nature of the internet, which to a degree makes sense. Like everything it needs some form of order. Right now that order is n00bs and aol = teh evil , but especially on the spam argument its very difficult to enforce something that is subject to no international laws. Especially without the input of the originating nation.
Some form of voulentary body would be the most elegant solution, that ISPS and webservers opt into. So people wanting to make money from the internet have a standard to acheive and customers have a standard they can rely on.

I think handing over a resource to be controlled by a system of governance is a bit drastic just to end spam. To be honest I would rather get penis patch ads than have the internet controlled by anything like the UN.

I hope this never happens -- if it does, then the Internet will invariably start to fragment in the worst ways possible. Taken to an extreme, the Internet could split in half, with an "official" U.N.-controlled Internet and an unoffical Internet run by the countries opposing the plan.
If that happened, then both versions would die.
And I still think it is a bad idea, but we all know all internet traffic already runs through Area 51, which is why Tong wants it destroyed.
Lol, the sad thing is, that's the same thing I thought about when I first heard of this.
Anyway, I agree with everyone else, this is a bad idea and I hope it never goes through. The entire POINT of the internet was to be non-censored and open, if they force it to be mediated then what's even the point? And I think we'd see many sites simply disappear, some due to censoring of them, and some because they don't want to operate in a controlled environment. And really, shouldn't they be stopping MAIL spam before they try stopping internet spam? I mean I'm all for getting rid of viruses and spyware, but controlling the internet is NOT the way to do it, no matter how much involvement a certain group has. Perhaps we'll be seeing the fabled rise of the Internet 2 and the Internet 3, as fortold by Deus Ex?
