You can find an SBLive! 5.1 for $25-$35 used nowadays...
Or a used Audigy1 for $30-$50 used...

Both offer very good hardware acceleration and the ability to use Environmental Audio (EAX) which is for some a very fun dimension added to the gaming experience...

Or are you wanting to buy new?

If so, SBLive's I think can be found for like 40 and audigys... around 60... methinks...

Consider a nForce2. They sound very good, lots of cheap ones are available, digital output ones are slightly more expensive. BUT... they come with a free motherboard attached, so you need a supporting AMD CPU and RAM or it isn't such a good deal.

that is a nice way of putting it :)... free motherboard actually that is how I thought of it when I bought mine.

Hercules Gamesurround Fortissimo III 7.1 - about 40USD at pretty much any CompUSA. This baby even sports an optical link in the back of the card.

i would say an audigy1... audigy2 is barely an upgrade, and an audigy 1 has all the eax options to boot:)

Hercules Fortismo III, Turtle Beach Santa Cruz, or Audigy2 in that order. Don't buy SBLIVE, it's a PCI bandwidth hog. And Audigy1 isn't really worth it when Audigy2 OEM is only $50.

Sorry jAkUp, but you are very wrong in that statement, an Audigy2 IS a very big upgrade in terms of sound quality.

One thing to remember about nForce2 and sound. Unless the board has soundstorm, and you use digital out, you are not using anything better than any other analog onboard sound, which = crap.

If you are very much a gamer, then the Audigy2 should be your first choice. If you are not really a gamer, then there are alot of good quality sound cards around, but be sure to read user comments first, maily about drivers, as Ive read that alot of sounds do in fact have some bad drivers since XP has been out.
