What is the AMD Thorton again?

I know it as... Palomino (266FSB, .18micron, 256k L2) Then Thoroughbred (266FSB, .13micron, 256k L2) And finally Barton (333FSB, .13micron, 512k L2)

Whats a Thorton? Iv'e seen it in a suppliers price list as a 333FSB AthlonXP 2200+

Thorton is a BArton except it only has 256K L2 cache. But the core itself is nearly identical to Barton. So basically it is a revised and slightly cooler temp TBred. I think they may be phasing out the Tbred core, but not the old speed ratings, so Thorton was born.

A ThoroughbredBarton is exactly that.. a Barton with half the cahce and a 266mhz DDR FSB.. It is basically the same as thoroughbreds up to 2400+, but is made using the barton core.

I think it was only a rumor however, the name was made up by the 'press' not AMD, and i think the final result was the applebred core Duron, which is like a thorton but with 1/4 the L2 cahce..

Hmm... that makes sense, over the last few days we've gotten new AMD chips in at work, basically 2200's, and 2400's with the extended rectangle core, basically they look just like a barton, however, they are not labled with the 512 Cache. I was wondering what the hell those were:)

There is a way to turn on the other 256K cache. There is one brige to conect and you have 512k L2 cache (do a google search, I can't remember which brige).

I work in a local comp store here in Montreal, doing sales/repairs and building new ones. Its the first time we see an Athlon64 going through our store and it happens to be a FX-51. Any chip costing as much as this one will never be a best seller, although i hopes it does better than the P4EE
